3 Reasons Your Article Marketing Efforts Are Wasted
Article marketing is by far one of the best ways for you to start getting some initial traffic to your website. Whether you have a brand new website or you have an aged site that needs another boost, doing article marketing can help you get what you want…. More Targeted Visitors!
But just like every other concept, technique and “secret” that is part of running an online business, article marketing is not something that you “just do” or at least not in an effective way from day 1.
The thing is that there are a fair amount of people that have learned how to do article marketing the right way and who benefit from it in terms of not just targeted traffic but more importantly in terms of an increase in income from their online businesses.
Unfortunately most people are doing article marketing the WRONG way!
I know that there are many ways to do article marketing and talking about a “right” and a “wrong” way might be a little misleading and the right term would probably be that they are not getting the full effect from the time and effort they put into their article writing venture.
The 3 Article Marketing Mistakes
Since I love article marketing as a tool to generate traffic to my websites as well as a way to get incoming links and improving search engine rankings, I have also spent a lot of time learning how to do article marketing effectively.
But it wasn’t always like that and just like you might be doing right now, I have also made a lot of mistakes along the way but I am glad to say that I have learned from my mistakes.
Mistake #1
The first mistake that I see people making is to not create a plan and follow through. Writing a single article and submitting it to one or two article directories will not produce any noteworthy results.
For article marketing to work you will need to do it massively and consistently over at period of at least 30 days (and to be on the safe side I would suggest doing it for 60 days).
Each day you should write one or two articles about a problem that people in your niche are having and how they can possibly solve it. I know that it might be hard at first to come up with +60 problems that people in your niche have and that is why you need to brainstorm and plan these 30-60 days.
So to avoid making mistake number one you must be massive and consistent writing helpful niche specific articles.
Mistake #2
But even if you don’t fall into the trap of not doing enough you can still make mistakes that will keep you from being a successful article marketer.
Because even if you do write +60 articles you will still need to write about something that people are actually searching for and that is why you need to do keyword research.
Article directories such as EzineArticles and ArticleDashboard will help your articles rank fairly quickly and especially if you are targeting some of the not so competitive keyword terms.
If you do this right you will be able to find your articles ranking in page 1 in Google the very same day that it is approved by the editorial teams. This means that you can start to see traffic coming in within a few days.
Unfortunately many people fail because they didn’t do their keyword research and in return they find themselves having wasted a lot of time writing articles that nobody will ever find and read.
To avoid making mistake number two you must do proper keyword research and find the keyword terms that will bring you traffic and has very little competition.
Mistake #3
Now that you know how to avoid making mistake number 1 and 2, you will notice that your articles are being read by visitors finding it via the search engines. This is great but if they never go from reading your articles to visiting your site you’re still not getting the maximum effect from your efforts.
Want you want is for people to come to your website (blog/sales letter/squeeze page) and take the action you want them to take. But to get there they will have to click the link in your author resource box. (You did put your link in the box right??)
To get people to click your link you will need to not only learn how to write your articles in a way that will lead them to your resource box, but also to write your resource box in a way that will make them want to click the link and visit your site to learn more.
This might sound obvious but I can personally attest to this not being as easy as it might sound.
One way to learn how to do this quickly is to see what other expert authors are doing. Find authors that have written hundreds (if not thousands) of articles and learn from what they are doing.
And finally you will need to test. Aim for a minimum of 15% click through rate on your articles. This means that if you have 100 people reading your article at least 15 of them should click the link and come to your site.
When you become an expert at this you’ll be able to get 40% click through or more on your articles.
Conclusion
These three mistakes are not ALL the mistakes that are made but if you learn how not to make all three of them and you take consistent massive action, do proper keyword research and learn from other expert authors you WILL see targeted traffic coming to your website very quickly.
To Your Success,
Mikael

loving this post! Mistake number 1 is probably at the base of all mistakes, too many people just put up one article and then sit back thinking traffic will fload their site and then, when that doesn´t happen they say article marketing s*cks!
The only way to learn is to keep doing it, checking the results and improving on your article marketing skills which won´t come overnight…
Have a great weekend!

Thank you Mirjam. I’m glad you liked it.
Article Marketing skills are definitely not learned by writing one article and hopefully this article will help people that don’t know this to “see the light”

LOL, you are so right!
Article marketing is definitely not for the faint hearted …. but takes quite some time to write and submit, making sure your skills are improving over time
but then again, the more you do it, the faster you will get

So do you do article marketing for traffic mainly? I was doing it primarily to get backlinks! Or is it a handy coincidence that you’ll get both if done right?
I must admit even after our last conversation on article marketing I have barely done anything. Just wrote another article and submitted it to a couple of sites but like you say, 1 article is not enough.
Know any decent content writers?

Hi Chris, yes it is only for traffic but in terms of both the direct traffic and the organic (because of the links).
Have you tried http://www.need-an-article.net?

Mikael, what would you consider an average and then a good CTR on articles? Also, have you found that weekends are a slower time for readers compared to weekdays? Thanks…Regards

Hi Ric, there are many things that will influence a CTR but I would say that if you are seeing number consistently being below 10% then you should look into what you’re doing wrong.
As for when readers find my article I have to say that I don’t monitor it and I really don’t care. As long as they find them it is enough for me.

Hi Mikael,
When submitting these mass number of articles, do you normally link them to your site’s homepage or is it better to use them primarily for deep linking? I normally use one link for the homepage and one for deep linking (since you’re usually allowed two links in the resource box) but I’m not sure if this is the best way to go about it.

Geoff, normally that is the way I would do it as well. One link for the homepage and one for deeplinking. Another option is one for the money site and one link to one of the other sites linking into your money site (to boost that sites strength).

Hi,
The subject of this post it is very attracting! And the 3 mistakes are very well picked …
But I wander…what about submitters software like Article Post Robot and the recent Article Mass Control? It seams that these software spin the same article and after that it submit to a great number of article directories.
So, will this be effective? Will this help on driving traffic to your site? Or are you going to call this mistake number 4?
Best wishes,
Sinela

Hi Sinela,
Submission tools like the two you mention are there for a reason and it is not to drive traffic directly (for the most part). Instead they will help you get incoming links to your site and thereby (over time) start to rank better in the search engines and therefore attract more targeted organic traffic.
Both procedures work but for two different reasons. I would not say that these tools are wrong to you but just as with the article marketing I have explained above you must know how to use them in the right way for them to be effective.

Hello Mikael,
when looking to your 3 mistakes i see that I already matched number one… ;-(
Main reason might be that I used it more for backlink ceation than as an instrument of traffic generation.
If you write the 60+ articles, do you distribute them to several article directories or do you use only the strongest ones with the highest benefit to a quick and good ranking of the article?

Juergen, mistake number 1 is about following through right?
As for the 60 articles I could do it several ways depending on what I wanted. If I am only looking for backlinks I would distribute them all over the place (all articles on several sites).
If I were only looking for traffic I would only submit the articles to the larger sites. Most small article directories will not bring you any traffic.

Yes, I was talking about was the issue following through.
Maybe it’s a little because in german language it is hard to find a strong article directory, since most of them lost their stength in the last month’.

Juergen, who says that you need a German directory? You can just use the English directories that will accept linking to a foreign website.

Hi Mikael,
but how can this work for traffic generation? The content of the atricles have to be written in english – I assume. But people searching for something, normally use the search results in their native language. Therefore I’m sceptical, if it really works that good in a foreign language than in english language.

That is true. It won’t work for traffic generation, but it will work for linkbuilding which in the end will give you better ranking and therefore more traffic. So I would still encourage you to use that approach but just not for direct traffic.

Article distribution is no doubt one the best ways to get traffic, backlins and SE rankings. The real problem many times is the mistake number one. To be consistent with this marketing method you’ll need a lot of time or budget to hire good writers.
