Article Marketing Research – Marketing Online Articles Effectively
Using article marketing as a strategy for direct targeted traffic has been proven very effective over and over again. But there are a lot of specific key points that you need to know about in order to become as effective as you possibly can and one of these key elements are to do proper article marketing research in your specific niche.
If you are using article marketing as a way to promote your websites to get more targeted traffic (I’m not taking about backlinks here) it is extremely important that you know what your audience is interested in before you start your article campaign. Spending hours and hours (or dollars if you have hired help) writing articles about topics that is of no interest to your target audience will be a waste.
That is why you should always spend a little time doing article marketing research which basically means that you go to one of the largest article directories (e.g. EzineArticles) and look for what your audience wants to read about. It is a very easy task to do but very few article marketers actually do this.
How to do Article Marketing Research on EzineArticles
Instead of just telling you what to do let me show you how easy it is by giving you an example. I’ll pick the topic of “debt relief” in the finance category of EA.

Once you’re in the category you will see a long list of the latest articles that have been posted on EA in that specific niche.
But those articles are not very informative in terms of the research we’re about to do.
However if you click any one of them (doesn’t matter which one) and then scroll way down to the bottom this is what you’ll see.

These are two lists that will not only tell you what articles have been viewed the most but also what articles other webmasters have found useful enough for them to use the article on their own websites.
Both of these lists contain key information and you will want to study them and copy what they do because that is how you yourself will get the most targeted visitors to see your article.
I am curious… have you EVER done this kind of article research before writing an article?
Marketing Online Articles is the Second Key Element
If you spend the time on the research above you will already be way ahead of most other article marketers but that is definitely not all that you can do. In my recent post 3 Reasons Why Your Article Marketing Efforts Are Wasted you could read about the importance of following through, doing keyword research and creating a highly converting resource box.
One thing that I didn’t mention was the importance of not just writing and submitting your articles but also to do some marketing of your online articles once they are posted. By marketing online articles I am talking about not just leaving them to their “destiny” but to actively start promoting them.
You don’t need to spend as much time as you do promoting your main money site but even a small amount of marketing and promotion will go a long way in combination with the authority of a site like EzineArticles.
One of the easiest ways to promote and article is to social bookmark it. You have probably read the articles about maximizing social bookmarking benefits so I won’t go too much into it.
The point is that by simply doing a little social bookmarking and other simple types of promotion and linkbuilding to your articles you will not only increase the articles ability to rank high in the search engines and thereby send you more traffic but you will also help the page with your article increase in PR and thereby give send your main money site (or whatever site you’re linking to from your resource box) a boost in link juice.
Conclusion
Doing proper article marketing is not something that should be taken lightly and especially not if you want to maximize the effect. Doing article marketing research to find out what your audience would want to read about, write about those topics using a compelling headline and then finally spend a little time promoting the articles that you submit will have a huge impact on the targeted traffic and the future linkjuice that will spill over to your site.
To Your Success,
Mikael

I’ve used Ezine a little bit, but not been successful with it, maybe because I didn’t do this kind of research. Will give it another shot.

That can definitely be part of it Manshu, but when you say that you “haven’t been successful” what does that mean exactly?

When I say I haven’t been successful, I mean that one guest post at a reasonably big blogger fetches far more referrals than 10 entries on ezine.

Okay. How many articles have you submitted? Some things tend to have a little learning curve.

Hi Mikeal. One of the challenges I’ve often faced in the past is keeping my articles on the first page of google. If you take EA for example, you’ll often find dozens if not hundreds of articles with the very same title keywords you are targeting and yet only one of the articles is within the first page of google, the others have somehow fallen off the first page or even the index entirely. Is there a way to prevent this from happening to your own articles? I see you mentioned linking to them to give them some link juice. Is there anything else you can do or is this one of the mysteries of google as to why certain articles rank higher and for much longer than others?

Hi Geoff,
I would say that linking to them is the best way to keep them ranking. After all they are just “web pages” like every other page.
One thing I would add though is that I would probably rather try to rank my website instead of putting too much energy into ranking articles placed on a website that someone else owns.

Thanks Mikael. Very true, they are just web pages so the same SEO principals should apply to them as to any other page. On that note, you’ve got me thinking; I believe then the following factors should affect the SERPs for an article placed on an article site (please feel free to disagree!)
- PR of article site
- Content uniqueness (the fewer article sites you submit it to, the better your article tends to rank when compared to mass submissions)
- On-site optimization (keyword density, title optimization, LSI, etc.)
- Off-site optimization (i.e. Incoming links and relevant outgoing links)
I completely agree with you on putting more focus on getting your own web pages to rank but if the main purpose of article submissions is to generate traffic, I’m thinking it’s only advantageous to do everything possible (within reason) to help them rank well and stay ranked even if it takes a bit more time to optimize them. That way you don’t have to keep churning them out to replace the ones that no longer rank well. Your thoughts?

I agree that if you want to build traffic through an article then you will naturally want it to rank highly. However I don’t see the point of having visitors filter through an article directory instead of just coming strait to your site. That will SIGNIFICANTLY reduce your potential amount of visitors to your site (I’m talking 70%-95% reduction).
However if that is what you want to do then “yes” everything you said is true. If you want that one article to rank highly then you should only submit that unique article to ONE directory.
Just to clarify things, then I am suggesting to submit your articles to as many directories as possible in terms of getting as much inbound links to my site as possible, because I am normally working on getting MY site to rank instead of the articles submitted.

I see, so the main reason you submit articles is for the back links to your site, the traffic from the articles is a secondary benefit. I guess I had it backwards
In that case then, mass submissions (compared to submitting to only one or two article sites) does make more sense in the long term. You may not get as much traffic from the articles themselves (since they won’t rank as high) but having so many back links will help your own site rank and eventually get more direct traffic from the SE’s.

Exactly. That is how I do it but I am sure you can find someone that will teach you otherwise.

No Mikael, I’ve never done such a research regarding Articles. For me this all is very new and I am surprised at my own self for so long I was unaware of this field despite having a very good experience on Internet. Article Marketing for traffic is going to help out a lot and there are freelance writers as well who can do the job for you but it’s important to get yourself familiar with it too so you can tell the writer what type of content you need.

Writing articles is tiresome but it is effective and cost less compared to other marketing strategies such as PPC. It’s like hitting two birds in one stone, we get traffic for our website and get quality links to improve our rankings. Not bad indeed right?
