Find Cheap Retirement in Mexico or Elsewhere?

By Mikael | 3,359 views

Cheap Retirement in MexicoI came across a great article over at DigeratiLife about the fact that there are a lot of people looking into how they can be able to retire in a cheap place. The reasons for this can be many but I believe that a large part of it is that the latest crash in stock portfolios and house prices have had a drastic impact on a lot of people looking at their retirement.

I’ve personally been looking for places where cheap retirement would be possible but not because I am looking to retire but rather that I want to experience what great lifestyles you can have without making millions of dollars per year. For instance I’ve found that you are able to have a pretty cool lifestyle in the Philippines for about $1,000 – $1,500 per month (you can get a 1 hour massage for about $3-$4) :)

The same applies if you would want to retire in Malaysia and there you would even be able to avoid paying taxes on any income from foreign countries. Being an Internet marketer I really like that idea as my income would solely come from outside of the country.

Now that I’ve read about finding cheap retirement in Mexico, that is definitely something that I will have to look into. Mexico has a lot of beautiful places and from what I have found so far the living costs are reasonable.

If you are looking for places that will provide you with cheap living circumstances then I suggest that you do some research on the countries I’ve mentioned. Also a place like Thailand might be an interesting choice.

One of the best ways to find information on the individual countries and how it is to live there is to search for the country name and “expat”. There are a lot of expat groups in the different countries all around the world and you’ll find that they are more than happy to answer your questions about the country that they have chosen to be their place of living and/or retirement.

Have you ever considered moving to somewhere cheap in order to maybe skip your job or to go on an early retirement?

To Your Success,
Mikael

India is pretty cheap too and the bigger cities offer lifestyles that are close to western ones, at reasonable prices.

Thanks Manshu, do you know if the standard only apply for the big cities? I’m not that much of a big city person :)

Great,
I have often wondered about moving to other places than here in Denmark, but mostly because of the weather here being so cold.

One might even buy an island.
The other day I saw an article about a person buying an island of some other famous person who had written some books before, and I went to check out the company they mentioned to be one of the biggest sellers of islands in the world.

One can get an island quite cheap. For example you might buy an island in south America or central America for $30-40.000 for the cheapest ones which might have your own beach on one side and a small port on the other.

Could be interesting, though I’m not sure If I could persuade the rest of the family, being my wife and 3 kids…

Where did you read that you don’t pay tax on foreign income if you live in Malaysia?

I have searched a bit here and there, but so far no luck :(

Personally I would prefer Thailand to Malaysia, but the tax rate in Thailand is pretty bad if you make some serious money from affiliate marketing (up to 40%).

Hey Mads, this page is one of them: http://www.expatfocus.com/retirement-in-malaysia

If you’re not the big city type but don’t want to leave civilization, I think there’s a lot of value in medium-sized cities, particularly college towns.

You typically get much of the shopping and entertainment options, albeit on a smaller scale, and property values are much less, and if you’re into rural living it’s typically easy to do just on the outskirts of town.

This is meant for those of us who don’t want to leave the country year-round, of course.

Unadulterated words, some unadulterated words dude. You rocked my day!

Hi Mikael,
Your article on cheap retirement in Mexico is worth reading as well as planning. India is pretty cheap too and the bigger cities offer lifestyles that are close to western ones, at reasonable prices. You rocked my day!

I do believe that many Americans will have no choice but to move to Mexico (or further south). The price of food, gas, medications, and everything for that matter is rising at an alarming rate. Many retirees with a fixed income will not be able to live in the U.S.

As the price of oil increases, the price to distribute and deliver food will sky-rocket. Real estate taxes will need to increase to pay for the cities maintenance, teachers pay, etc. Our country is on a long road to recovery.

You could see a pattern of retirees moving to Mexico for the next several decades. The Great Depression lasted 17-years.
