DoFollow and CommentLuv Enabled
I have to admit that I have been a little reluctant about making this blog a dofollow blog but it has not been because I didn’t want to give out linkjuice. What I am afraid of is comment spammers. We all know them and hate them but I figured that since I monitor all my comments and approve or decline them manually it will probably be alright.
If I see that I’ll get hit with too much spam comments I’ll just revert back to what it was before. So until then please feel free to make valuable comments and in return get a little link love back.
One Rule Though: It is okay that you add a keyword in your name after a @ but ONLY signing with a keyword as a name will not be approved!
What Changed My Mind?
I’ve been thinking about doing it for a long time but the thing that added the final drop was reading Mr. SEO Help’s free Web 2.0 ebook. Even though I hate to see the Old School SEO stuff changing I also have to agree that Web 2.0 and user interaction is the way of the future and when I think of it I am also very much using it and enjoying it myself.
BTW if you’re wondering how to get a hold of the Free report I’m talking about then all you need to do is to subscribe to his feed. You can do so by clicking here.
Are You Becoming Part of the Web 2.0 Movement Yet?
If you have been marketing online for a while you have probably been “brought up” in the old SEO belief of keeping your linkjuice to yourself and not being too interactive with your audience. Things are changing and I’m sure we all feel it but the question is what we’re doing about it?
Have you taken on creating videos and audios? Are you building a customer following on Twitter? Are you marketing your business through a Facebook account?
I’m not talking about what you spend your time on when being non-productive
but rather how you’re using all of these new tools and sites to promote and expand your business?
Are you holding back just as I have been? What scares you about this “new world”?
I would really like to get a debate going and now that you’re getting a little link love from your efforts I hope that you’re willing to participate.
To Your Success,
Mikael

Yes I am trying out twitter, but not so much Facebook. Twitter is working out alright I guess, but I am not sure whether I should devote a whole lot of time to it or even look to promote the blog at all through it.

Hi Manshu, so what you’re saying is that you haven’t used it professionally yet but only used it to get to know it?
I think that is very common and that many people end out spending (a lot of) time on Twitter, Facebook etc. but without gaining anything from it business wise.
Are you going to discontinue using it if you find that you can’t use it as part of your online marketing strategy?

Hi Mikael,
First, thank you for the reference again
One good way for you to be totally strict about the usage of keywords in your comments is to enable KeywordLUV, this way people have no excuse not to do it the right way, and you don’t have to feel guilty either by disabling their link too if they don’t respect your policy.

Hi Nicolas, first of all good content should get a lot of links so I am only trying to enforce that
I didn’t know that a keywordLUV plugin even existed or to rephrase that I didn’t know what it was called. I’ve found it and installed it. Thank you for letting me know.

Hi there. This is the first time I ever commented on your blog and I hope it will not be the last. It appears that we do have something in common and that is we are both taking Nicolas’s 21 day SEO Mastery Course, lol. Having your blog commentluv enabled is definitely a big improvement and an excellent bait for visitors to leave their opinions.
Oh, BTW, yes I use Twitter (moderately) and have been engaging in some interesting Twittcussions:) Currently have somewhere around 15K followers. If you use Twitter, I encourage you to add the “Retweet” plugin of @tweetmeme. It can work wonders, specially for people who are “lazy” to leave comments.

I feel that it’s the best combination of plugins altogether, this way you allow people to benefit while filtering out people who don’t spend the time to really read (most probably the spammers).
As to enforce quality content, you know where I stand on that one, like I always said, because your site is “follow” doesn’t mean you have to scream it everywhere, this way spam won’t be much more of an issue.
Most of the people who comment on my blog still do it because of my content more than people who come for a backlink.

Hi DiTesco, great to see you comment here. I appreciate it.
There is no doubt that Nicolas training would truly benefit almost every webmaster since I think this is the first SEO tutorial that I have ever seen go into that kind of detail (and I’ve seen quite a few).
I don’t currently use Twitter as I still don’t see the purpose. I did find one valuable solution for it (http://retirerichroadmap.com/blog/finally-a-profitable-way-to-use-twitter/) but to use that I still don’t need to use Twitter myself.
What will the Retweet do for me if I decide to use Twitter?

I totally agree with you that all webmasters can and should benefit from Nicolas’s course. Most SEO tutorials or ebooks I have read normally will have some “sales” pitch in it and will not cover the “dept” of information Nicolas is providing. I have to admit that I am learning a lot and only time is my worst enemy to “follow through” with my new found knowledge:)
If you use Twitter, the RT button makes it easier for your visitors to click on it and ReTweet it to their own followers. As you know, retweeting is one of the highest forms of compliment on the Twitterverse. This could obviously generate some added visitors for your blog and hopefully turn them into loyal readers. I have lazy visitors who for some reason are “afraid” to leave comments and rather they let me know that they have been there by Retweeting my post.

Hi Lance, I am sure that is a great question but I am not quite sure what you mean? Are you referring to the fact that I have added comment luv to my site and whether I have seen any benefit from doing so?
If that is your question then I can say that I hasn’t been that long since I added it and as for whether or not I have seen any effects I think it is hard to tell. I haven’t seen any major changes but at least I hope that the people getting the backlinks have been enjoying them

I have set one of our company blog to do follow to give credit to visitors. Its been 1 month already and it is true. Traffic is still on the same inclination. I find the frequency of updates are more important than comment luv or any other seo stuffs.

I appreciate the use of keyword luv, but I feel you when you are talking about having to worry about so many spammers, especially when the comments are totally generic and don’t relate to the post at all. Either way, I am glad that more blogs are getting on board with keyword luv.

Hi Mark,
First of all welcome to the blog. I hope you will be joining us on a regular basis.
Yes comment spammers are growing in numbers and I am starting to be really picky with allowing comments and especially if they are from new people. Regular readers can get away with a “good post” comment (sometimes) but brand new visitors can’t. So I am glad that you wrote a few lines in your comment so that I could allow it

I wondering does google rank a blog higher if it has comments? Does anyone know whether google crawl to see comment numbers

Hi Graham,
We can only guess but my guess would be “yes” it matters. Not in terms of the amount of comments but rather because new content is constantly added which in the eyes of Google means that it has fresh and updated information.
Again it is only my personal guess

Google doesn’t crawl to see comments numbers, but having comments does matter for the following reason:
The bots crawl your site the first time, and usually don’t do it until your page has a change. While the bot pass by your page again, it will send a header request of your page, if nothing has changed since the last crawl, it will just ignore the page and move on (which can be good sometimes as it saves bandwidth).
On the other hand, in our case, as new comments are added, the header of the page is then read by the bots are recently modified, and they will then crawl it.
No doubt that a site that is frequently crawled and cached will perform better in the search engines as its listings will also be more up to date.

Related to statements from Lance, Michael & Abbey.
I’m not sure that KeywordLuv or CommentLuv will drastically increase the traffic (except some spamming, but therefore other plugins might be used…)
But the benefit I see is that the reader of the blog get’s more and better information about other commenters. With CommentLuv I follow some presented blog posts if it sounds interesting to me. Without CommentLuv I would’ t spend the effort to check out an URL behind a name.

Hey Juergen, welcome to the blog. I haven’t had that many German people visiting.
I think you might be right that it could bring additional traffic to the people that comment. From a blog owner perspective that will not be beneficial but since most bloggers are also commenting other blogs it will probably bring additional traffic from those.

Ok, I wrote a response, and now need to completely change it.
What I wrote is this: I faced the same dilemma. I have to say, you’ll definitely get more spam comments, but if you moderate them, it’s really not so bad. Just be careful about losing genuine comments (at time it’s hard to tell).
However, since this post was written in June, you’ve actually done this longer than I have, so probably know this very well
Did you really feel any effect on losing linkjuice? It’s been of some concern to me, but not very much. However, I’m curious whether it’s actually something to be concerned over.

Hi Udi,
It is true that you will need to moderate comments and I’ve been doing that on a daily basis and I guess you’re right that some “true” comments might get deleted. But that is how it is. A “good job” comment might be “legit” but it doesn’t bring any additional value and will therefore probably not pass the filter (me).
As for the linkjuice aspect then it is not something that I am concerned about. I believe that everything you give out will return tenfold and what matters is rankings and not linkjuice in my book.
And my rankings have only improved

Hi Mikael,
That’s exactly what I was counting on when I installed KeywordLuv, CommentLuv and made everything DoFollow. That the loss of linkjuice would be minimal in comparison to the exposure I’d get. So far it seems to be worth it, but then again, my site is still new, so I don’t know the long term effects. It’s very good to hear that it hasn’t hurt your site and in fact helped it (I actually think that’s how I found your blog).
Thanks for the response! I’ll definitely visit here more often

Firstly, thanks for offering a do-follow blog. Not everyone is an spammer (but sometimes it seems that way).
Re: 2.0. We’ve been gradually adopting more tools that enable us to interact with our prospects and clients. Remarkably, it has worked really well. Of course it’s not free, but well worth the investment time.

I’ve been considering making the switch as well. Like you, I also manually filter all comments, and if I’m going to be doing that anyway, I might as well encourage the good commenters to participate more by offering some link love.
As it stands now, I’m already getting spam comments… a few more bad ones wouldn’t outweigh the benefit of rewarding the good ones in my mind. It’s good to know others in the industry are making the switch as well.
Best of luck in the future, and I’ll be sure to stop back in from time to time

One thing you can do is just manually remove the URL from the name supplied. When human spammers see the name but no link, they go elsewhere. For actual bot spam, there is little you can really do apart from use programmes such as akismet.

Hey Jakk, I’ll actually do that some times but I agree that the bots are hard to compete with. All you can do it hit “spam” and hope for the best.

Bots drive me nuts, my blog gets hammered with 100′s of comments a day, they are never relevant to the article so i always spam them, I always believe that spending the time, contributing to the topic will always be a better approach. Just installed the comment Luv plugin, hope that works well on my SEO efforts, thanks for the share.
