Follow One Course Until Successful

By Mikael | 2,406 views

Keep Your FocusI have talked about this topic before but I find that it is so incredibly important that it is worth mentioning again. The reason I came to think of it was that Jonathan Ledger has written a post about this topic a few days ago after he had read a thread at the Warrior forum.

As online marketers we’re trying to do everything ourselves and this is especially true when we are first starting out learning all about this new and exciting world of online business. But doing everything poorly instead of mastering a few things have never been the road to success and since we have the added “benefit” of being bombarded with “bright shiny objects” (aka. new marketing products) whose only purpose is to try to make us change what we doing by promising us something that seems better.

How I Stay Focused

On my office wall I have a quote I got from the book Why We Want You To Be Rich and whenever I want to go off my course I look up at that quote and resist the temptation. The quote says:

FOCUS : Follow One Course Until Successful

But that is just one of the methods I use. Even though I might from time to time come across as a guy that knows it all and that works in a consistent and focused manor that is not always the case. I too get distracted and feel the urge to buy the “shiny objects” but over time I have learned to use different approaches to resists the temptation and get back on track quickly.

Apart from the quote on my wall I am a big believer in creating task lists for each day that you plan to work on your business. There is never a day where I wake up that I don’t have a plan for what I need to accomplish for that day in order to feel good about what I have accomplished.

Sometimes I’ll do a lot more than what was planned but I will never do any additional work UNTIL I have finished what is on my To Do List.

Another great thing about having such a list is that once you have finished what you had planned to do you can take the rest of the day off if you want. That is an awesome feeling to know that you have taken steps to improve your business and yet you have the power to give yourself time off work once you have accomplished what you set out to do. I also find that looking at it that way will help you increase your effectiveness because you want to take as much time off as possible :)

I know it may sound crazy since you’re your own boss but it works.

Finally I have taken the very popular advice about not signing up for newsletters to heart. I’ve been on hundreds of IM lists and I’ve unsubscribed from hundreds of lists as well. Being on many IM lists will not help you in your online business as they are there to sell you something and get you off course.

Sometimes they’ll provide you with valuable information but often it will not be information that you will need in your business in order to become successful. If you are struggling to make your business work and you’ve subscribed to lists that are trying to sell you the “next big thing” it is like walking into a restaurant without having eaten for days. You can’t resist buying something and that is only natural.

If you know you don’t need the product then your best option is to avoid being told that it even exists.

For me these three advices (the quote, the task list and the unsubscription) has resulted in working so much more on my business that last month resulted in a 28% increase in profits.

Now I don’t know what your job is like but I know that I have never been given a 28% pay raise from one month to the next.

But the best part is that I’ll bet that next month will be even better :)

What do you do to stay on course and focused in your online business?

To Your Success,
Mikael

Hi Mikael,

This is a great topic and you pointed out a few important things here.
As far I go in online business I confirm to myself that focusing is most fact that will bring you success.

Unfortunately there are so many things that distract you. And I really want to try them :)
At the moment I use one technique that keeps me focused and this is writing a plan every day. I must say it really helps me and will bring result in shorter time.

I must say I always was attracted to quotes. I find deep understanding in some of them, but I never put one on my wall even if I thought of doing that many times and I admited that quotes can help me keep focused.

And finally reading your article here also keeps me focused :)

Hi Ion,

First of all I am only glad I can help you keep focused. ;)

Wanting to buy it all is something we all face (after all there is a reason the Internet Marketers are successful at what they do) and that is why I think it is better to completely avoid seeing their marketing message if possible. That way you don’t even have to consider taking the offer :)

Mikael

A very knowledgeable post, a position that everyone faces in once own life be whatever endeavor they are going on. Staying focused is a huge challenge as they are hundreds of things to distract you. Especially when you work from home, making a to do list and working on it is also a great way to stay focused but i think dividing your work proportionately and setting a time limit for yourself also enhance focus to a great extent.

Not considering others offer means that you have to restrict your mind think of that. That means we have to control our thoughts, and that is very hard.

Daily we might have ten or hundred of thoughts which will distract us. Saying this I mean that focusing means is to control our mind thoughts. Not allow to ourselves think about something we don’t need at the moment. And this is very hard because our thoughts are uncontrolable.

I see what you’re saying Ion but I don’t agree that our thoughts are “uncontrollable”. Yes it is hard but not impossible.

The reason I say to just avoid the offers it simply to make it easier. Since controlling your mind is something that very few people are good at, chances are that most reading this blog can’t and therefore it is better to just avoid them :)

Mikael,

I was making a point that avoiding offers means restricting thinking about that, at least till you end up or you master what is the first priority on your day list or week list.

I agree that avoiding things will put us back on our way.

Ion,

Then I misunderstood what you were trying to say. Sorry about that.

This couldn’t have come at a better time!
I’m in the process of fleshing out an idea I’ve had and am researching keywords, domains, competition etc WHILST I’m still in the middle of developing another project.

I know it’s not the right thing to do to give myself too much to do but I’m like you, I see a shiny object, new and impressive and have to have it.

Hi Matt,

Yup. That is a bad combo. May I suggest you write it down in a “future projects” journal instead?

Works for me.

What gives me benefits..I keep. What doesn’t…I don’t.

That’s what I do.

I find unsubscribing to emails and newsletters to be one of the best thing to stay productive and focused.

Most of the time, they only distracts as well as waste my time and money.

OK, now you’re like the mentalist. This post is nearly a verbatim record of my current challenges. And you’ve provided a simple formula…and a Great Quote. I’m deleting my subscript list down to 1:) Thanks!!
