How to Get Social Bookmark Backlinks and Why You Want Them – Part 2
Yesterday I told you about the basics of social bookmarking and how it works. If you don’t know what social bookmarking is then I suggest that you go check out that post before reading this one.
Today I promised to tell you a little more about how you can benefit from using these bookmarking tools in terms of getting more incoming links to your website(s). To understand how to do this let me first explain to you why links are important.
Google in particular values a website based on the number and the quality of the sites that are linking to that particular website. How much and how little the individual link is worth is a debate that is forever ongoing in the SEO world and I don’t want to participate in that discussion here.
What I want you to understand is that it is important to have as many different links pointing to your website as possible and that (along with article marketing) one of the ways to get more links can be through social bookmarking of your site and posts.
What this looks like in its basic form is this:

Now this might seem simple but that is because it is simple. The social bookmarking site will give you a 1-way link to your website (who said that 1-way links were hard to get?).
The great thing is that many social bookmarking sites are authority sites and have high PR (pagerank) values. This means that they can potentially give you a lot of value in terms of link strength. However you are not getting the links from their main page (which would be very nice) but instead you get a link from your own personal profile page within the website.
A Few Things about Social Bookmarking to be Aware Of
Now there are a few things that you need to be aware of when you want to build links by doing social bookmarking. One of them is that not all bookmarking sites are using “do-follow” links or to rephrase that there are a lot of them that are using “no-follow” on the links back to your site.
So in order to make the link valuable in Google (no-follow links can still carry some value in Yahoo and MSN) you will need to make sure that the links from your profile page in the individual social bookmarking sites back to your website are not no-followed.
There are several SEO tools that can help you locate no-follow links easily. One that I recommend is the SEO tool for Firefox.
Luckily there are already some nice people like Caroline Middlebrook that has done a lot of the work for you and has created a list of 20 social bookmarking sites that are not using no-follow in their links back to your site.
The list was last updated in February 2009 so you might find that not all sites are valid today. But my guess is that most of them are.
So now all you need to do is go to each site and create an account and bookmark your website’s main page in each of the 20 social bookmarking sites and you have then instantly created 20 new 1-way backlinks to your site. Easy right?
But it doesn’t end here and there are several advanced techniques that you can use to create an even greater value from each link but I’ll save that for tomorrow so I am sure that you’ll come back to read more
To Your Success,
Mikael

Hi Mikael,
Did you write anymore articles on social bookmarking backlinks? Thanks for these two. I’m just learning about them and your articles helped a lot.

Mikael, I’ve got a question. I’ve heard that you should not bookmark too many sites and particularly every page of the site you’re targeting, it should look genuine as if you’re bookmarking it naturally and not trying to improve rankings for your own site otherwise you may get penalized by Google, is it true?

@Audrey, Google can do a lot of things but it will probably be more likely that the bookmarking site will delete your account if it looks like you’re spamming.
However who says that you can’t use multiple accounts?

It all makes perfect sense, Im beginning to understand about promoting now, but I do find social bookmarking a long and tedious task. It took me two full days to promote one site and this was using a semi-automatic free online utility that bookmarks 40+ sites.

Hi Denise, there is no doubt about it being a boring task but there are only two ways to become successful online. Either you do all of these boring repetitive tasks yourself or you pay someone to do them for you. But to be successful they have to be done over and over and over…
That is where most people quit and therefore fail.
