How to Attract the Best Google Adsense Traffic

By Mikael | 1,815 views

Best Adsense TrafficWhen you are monetizing your website using Google Adsense it is not just important to test the best Adsense ad placement because placement might help you increase your CTR on the ads but as I have mentioned earlier the quality of the traffic is equally important and ad placement will not affect that.

One of the things that will have an impact on the quality of traffic to your site is the content that you wrap around your Adsense ads as I explained in my post yesterday. Traffic (aka people) that will come to your site looking for information will be the kind of quality traffic that Google will pay you highly for because that is the traffic that they will want to send to the advertisers (the people and businesses using Adwords).

But if you have had a website for some time and you have spent a little time analyzing the traffic you get to your site you have probably noticed that not all traffic will come from the same place. Some visitors will come for Google, MSN and Yahoo while others will come from article directories or blogs and forums where you are commenting and leaving your link.

In the last year (or two) we have seen a huge increase in traffic coming from completely new sources also knows as Web 2.0 (you can argue that blogs are kinda web 2.0). This can be from places like Twitter, Digg, StumbleUpon, Facebook and MySpace to name a few. All of these places can drive a significant amount of traffic to your site very quickly and if you know how to convert that type of traffic it can be a goldmine. But when it comes to making money with Adsense it is worthless and can actually be harmful to your profits.

It has been proven time and time again that the best Google Adsense traffic is the traffic that comes to your site from the search engines like Google, MSN and Yahoo. These are people actually searching for something and with the proper written content (as mentioned earlier) these people will not only convert well on your site (giving you a high CTR) but also on the advertiser’s sites. You get what you want, the advertisers (and Google) gets what they want and the people searching will (often) get what they want. It is a win/win situation.

So why did I say that Web 2.0 traffic can be harmful to your profits? The reason is that these people are not SEARCHING for anything. They are merely SITE SURFING. These people are not going to click your ads and even if they do they are not going to convert for the advertisers. As mentioned yesterday this will not only lower your CTR (more traffic and less clicks) but Google will also see that your traffic is not the high quality that they want to pass on to advertisers and because of it they’ll lower your payout per click.

So how do you maximize search engine Adsense traffic?

If you are running a WordPress blog this is actually very simple because of a brilliant plugin that has been developed. This plugin is called Who Sees Ads and what it can do is make sure that only the kind of traffic that you want to show ads to will see them. This is perfect because now you can make sure that only people coming to your site from the search engines will ever see those Adsense ads. It means that all other not SE traffic will not have an impact on your CTR and secondly you’re not going to “bother” the tech savvy web 2.0 surfers with Adsense ads (which they often despise).

Again I will want to point out that you MUST TEST. You want to test whether you will actually increase your overall profits from showing fewer ads to fewer people. You should be able to see an increase in your payout per click and even though you would get fewer clicks the end results should be a great deal higher than what you previously made. Personally I have tested this on several sites (and have read of lots of other Adsense money makers doing the same) and I have only seen positive results from it. It will all depend on where you’re current traffic is coming from.

To Your Success,
Mikael

Does this mean that having a higher CTR mean better paid ads on the site?

So glad I found your blog today! I’ve been looking hard for good resources to help me try to understand how to capitalize on Adsense more fully! Great post. I’ll be back soon to learn more!
Best,
Brandon

Hi Manshu and Brandon and welcome to the blog.

@Manshu, no it doesn’t have to be. You can force people to click ads but that will not necessarily give you a high payout per click. My post yesterday talks about why that is.

@Brandon, you’re welcome. Be sure to read the 4-5 latest posts I’ve made as they’ll explain at great deal of how to do it.

Interesting post but according to my analytics, I received AdSense clicks from visitors from Digg & StumbleUpon. But of course, it’s more like a 1:10 ratio compared to the search engines :)

Might give it a try and probably block subscribers and some socialbookmarking sites. Thanks

HI Michael, thanks for stopping by. Your statistics just shows that what I’m saying is correct ;) Web 2.0 users hardly ever click and they’ll also mostly provide poor click prices. Yes blocking them is the best overall solution.

This was a great post with good information. It makes excellent sense as well. When it comes to purely squeeze conversions as a goal, you want as much traffic as you can get. On the other hand, what you write makes perfect sense for why people get it wrong with adsense. I haven’t “gotten it right” by my own standards yet on any site I’ve had other than a few spammy I did to test out my account. Not spam, but just not the most informative or useful sites in the world, either. They were “obviously” tests, that’s all.

A lot of teachings show to drive traffic and as much traffic as possible. In this case you are totally right. It’s all about finding a really good market and reaching the people who are in that market – not just info addicts. It’s hard, since most of us, we are all info addicts ourselves :)

I’ll subscribe, thanks for your blog.

Brian

Hi Brian, welcome to the blog and thank you for your comment. Yes you are right that a lot of people are not making the most of their Adsense income and they are basically leaving a lot of money on the table. But we’ve all been there and as long as we learn and improve then we’re on the right track.
