How to Get Better Ranking with Links – EzineArticles

By Mikael | 925 views

Article Marketing Incoming LinksYesterday I talked about the basics of getting better ranking with incoming links and I said that I found that internal linking wasn’t as important as the incoming links. Some of my readers feel strongly about internal links and I would just like to point out that I AM NOT saying that internal linking isn’t beneficial to a site.

What I AM saying is that internal linking is “just” a way to pass “link strength” around to benefit more pages on a site. Internal linking DOES NOT create additional strength to a site as a whole but INCOMING LINKS DOES. If you do not have any incoming links you will not have any link strength to pass around and therefore you will NOT benefit from any internal linking efforts you might do.

But WHEN you have enough incoming links that is passing some link strength on to your site THEN internal linking will matter and will enable you to achieve better ranking for more pages on your site. I hope that makes up for any misunderstanding that the post might have caused. :)

So let us move on to actually start getting some of that link strength that I am talking about. Again this series of post will help you get better rankings for your site if you are just starting out but if you have been in the game for some time then you are probably already doing some (or all) of these things already or at least you know that you should.

The biggest problem that I see is that 99% of the webmasters out there already know most of these things but VERY FEW ACT UPON IT. Getting better search engine rankings are not that difficult (unless you’re in very competitive niches) because it is all a matter of incoming links. The more links you get the better you site will perform. PERIOD!

I know that some SEO experts will want you to believe that there are some secrets tricks that only they know but the bottom line is that if you get links you will improve your sites ability to rank. Now that doesn’t mean that all links are equal because they certainly are not. Some will have high value and some will carry little (if any) value and that is where SEO experts and optimizers can help you out. Where you might only be able to get links with lesser value they might be able to get some good strong links for your site.

Start slow with article links

If your site is brand new you DO NOT want to go out and get thousands of links to your site in the very first week. Take things slow and get into the habit of working on getting links. This will not only seem more natural to the search engines but it will also help you avoid feeling overwhelmed with work.

With a brand new domain I recommend that you start out by getting incoming links through article marketing. If you want to know more about article marketing and get some good advice then check out the article at DailyWritingTips or this one on MarketingPilgrim. Both articles provide some solid information on article marketing.

My personal favorite article directory is EzineArticles.com. Not only is it one of the largest article directories out there but it also has the benefit of being an authority site (has a high pagerank) and it gets spidered all the time which means that having articles on EA with links back to your website will help you get your website indexed in the search engines fairly quickly. Secondly it will provide you with visitors clicking the links in your submitted articles and it will also provide you with some link strength.

Instead of trying to post 10 articles a day to places like EA I would rather suggest that you spend more time on the individual article to establish yourself as an expert in your field or at least provide some great value that will have people want to click your links and come visit your site for more information.

Even people building websites in their spare time should have the time to write one or two articles a week and if you make sure to target the right keywords, provide value and use the right anchor text in your links then you will see visitors come your way from both the article directory and also the search engines as your ranking improves (this will probably take some weeks or months depending on the keyword you’re targeting).

If you could just get 2 articles submitted to places like EA per week (each having two links to your site) then you will already be doing more than most other webmasters. This might sound ridiculous to you but it is the truth. Most of them know what to do but they don’t do it. They don’t have a plan or they are not following it even though they know they should.

And remember to be patient. Don’t try to rush things. I know I said it yesterday but I am going to say it every single day because I know what it feels like to be impatient and wanting instant results but I also know how doing everything at once and trying to find the easy solutions and get thousands of links will only make things worse and not better. So be sure to ACT and BE PATIENT. Consistent working on getting links WILL benefit your site and help you improve your search engine rankings.

To Your Success,
Mikael

Nice capitalisation there Mikael :)

I agree with what you say though, 99% of getting links is simply acting, in fact I think thats true with most things!! Common sense alone can get you quite far.

I have never used article submission myself although promised myself I would do it soon. What would you recommend in terms of content? Presumably an original article with links back to your site (or a related article on your site). Are rewrites ok or would you recommend a completely new article?

You will definitely want to go with something original. Rewrites will work just fine if they are rewritten enough. If you want more direct visitors through the article be sure to provide good content and to write it in a way that will make them take action in the end (click your links).

Ah ok, so external links give you strength or juice as you call it :) and then internal links help spread that strength / juice to other pages. I get it now (or so I think)

You’re right on Manshu ;)

Nice article Mikael, I just want to add that it’s important to make sure that the articles you submit to your directory is one of quality.

Too many people spam those directories with very poor quality content.

By writing something of value, you increase your chances of having someone downloading and adding your article to their site, in opposition to having a spam article that get lost into the archive of the directory.

Absolutely true Nicolas. That is definitely another point that you would want to consider. I’m however not sure how many “good sites” are actually using these articles. My impression is that they are mostly used as “fillers”.

No doubt that many sites will only use your content as fillers, but if your article is of quality it still stands a chance to land on a good site.

I happened to me before and the article itself even got comments too both on the article directory and the blog where it was posted.

Considering all of this is happening in the “background” without additional effort on your part, I think that it would be a waste not to take advantage of this opportunity.

Quite often automated / syndicated sites will pick up your content and republish it (sometimes with links intact) giving you extra links!

I would say that the primary reason for writing an article is to have it picked up by multiple webmasters to use as content or just filler on their site and then getting that more links.
So one should always write good articles to have them picked up.

You could get 10 or 15 to pick it up and put on their site if the article is good, and thereby get 10-15 incoming links to your site, instead of spending time writing a poor article and just have it sitting on the article iste.

You also might just get a few to pick it, but if one of them puts it on a site with a pagerank of 4-6, that would just be great.

I wouldn’t say that it is the main thing but it can definitely be a plus. That is for sure.

Hi Makeal…really enjoying your site. I’m so thankful to you for your great insights. Question: Is it an effective strategy to submit all your articles to EzineArticles or is it better to submit one article to Ezine, the next to GoArticles. etc.?

Hi Geoff, I would recommend submitting the same article to all sites. It might not all bring you links but it can still bring you traffic.

Thanks for the quick reply Mikael. I will try this out. I was worried about duplicate content in the past but I read from some of your other posts that this is actually not an issue (assuming the article content is not on your own site). Cheers!

I heard that some of the article directories like Ezine does not allow articles anymore if they have already been posted to other article directories.

Have you come across this anywhere?

Hi Thomas,

Yes I have and it is not true. All they require is that you’re using the same author name (at least that is what they required from me).

Hey Mikael,

Its the first time i visited your site via this article :) . Really enjoyed it. The article is really interesting. I hope it’s allowed to ask a question here

Do you think it will steadily increase the ranking of your site by keep publishing articles weeky to ezinearticles. Right now i hit 2-3 articles but i read that i might stop to help your ranking cause of the same ip and website. They still bring traffic but do you have a recommendation for better results?

Regards

Peter

Hi Peter.

Welcome to the blog and thank you for asking that great question.

Now there is no “right” answer to this but I would say that it COULD benefit your site to add more articles if you do it right. If you link to your site using different anchor texts or you link to different pages on your site it can help.

But getting links from just one place is not enough so I would suggest that you start adding your articles to other places as well. Places like ArticleDashboard, GoArticles and EasyArticles are great.

You might also want to check out Hubpages, Squidoo and Wetpaint. Those places can also provide great links.
