How to Get Better Ranking with Links – The Basics

By Mikael | 169 views

Get Better Ranking with LinksJust like I told you yesterday there are two things that are required to improve your search engine ranking. The first (and most important) thing is to get links to your website and the second thing you will want is a plan for doing it. Linkbuilding is an ongoing process and it is not something that you will want to rush because it will most likely backfire on you.

Getting links to a brand new website will have to look natural to the search engines and that is why I tell you to not try to rush things. It you go out and buy some linking scheme that promises you 10,000 links in a few days I can promise you that it will hurt your site. It is not natural and the search engines will know that. I understand that you will want your rankings to improve as quickly as possible but it is important that you understand and ACCEPT that it will take some time. Once you truly accept it the process will become a lot easier. I’ve been in your shoes so please trust me. ;)

The basics of better ranking with links

There are some parameters that most SEO experts agree are beneficial to your search engine ranking and they are the ones that we will be taking advantage of in the coming days where I’ll provide you with different methods that will help you start building links and getting into the habit and the mindset of the game.

The parameters we will be focusing on are:

  • Links from different IPs
  • Links from related sites
  • Links from strong authority sites
  • Links with the right anchor text

You can probably find SEO “gurus” that will tell you a bunch of other stuff and you will probably also come across terms like LSI, Internal Linking, No-follow tags and several other terms that might not make sense to you. Before you start feeling overwhelmed I would like to tell you that even though all of these things are valid points they are NOT necessary to know about in order to be successful and make money with Adsense sites.

Links from different IPs

To get links from sites with different IPs simply means that you will want sites that are hosted on different web servers all over the world to link to you. Or to say it differently you do not want all of your links coming from the same site and/or the same web server. When I walk you through the different methods that I’ll recommend I’ll also show you how to see that the IPs are different.

Links from related sites

When you’re working on getting links to your site you will benefit most by getting links from sites that are thematically related to your site. If you have a site about rose gardening it doesn’t seem natural (see the pattern here???) to get links from sites talking about auto insurance or weight loss. Instead you will want links from sites about gardening tools, flowers, natural healing solutions, outdoor life and things like that.

Some people think that only links from other sites about rose gardening will benefit you but that is not true. You will definitely benefit from them but you will not need your competitors to link to you to get better rankings in the search engines.

Links from strong authority sites

Some sites are more popular than others and the search engines know this. To some extend you will see that the so called authority sites have a good pagerank like a PR5, PR6 or more. Sites that have high pageranks are often what we call authority sites and you will definitely want to get some links from them if possible.

The second benefit of getting links from these sites is that they get spidered often and you will want that little search engine spider to come to your site and index it.

Links with the right anchor text

The anchor text is the text that is the link to your site. When I link to my post about avoiding top paying keywords then the text “avoiding top paying keywords” is the anchor text. Sometimes you will only get a link with your URL and sometimes you might only get a “click here”. Both are just fine but you will want to have those good anchor text links as well as they tell the search engines what your site is all about and thereby helps your search engine rank for those words.

So now you have the basics to get started. Again I will want to repeat that THIS WILL TAKE TIME and you will need to accept this fact. If you can’t or aren’t willing to learn to accept it I really think you should rethink whether this is something for you. There is a lot of money to be made but work, time and patience is required.

Tomorrow I’ll give you the first method to start building a link to your website so if you don’t already know what keywords you would like your site to start ranking for I suggest that you do some research and preparation till we meet again.

To Your Success,
Mikael

So, internal links are not useful at all? This internal link business has always confused me.

Other question is that what if you optimize a blog like I do. I am not selling a particular product so I don’t want to optimize on a set of specific keywords. But, I do want the posts of ETFs to show on ETF searches and such. What is the best way to go about that?

Thanks!

Hi Manshu, no I am not saying that they are not useful. I’m saying that they are not Necessary. There is a big difference. Internal linking get indeed improve your ranking but compared to external links is has little benefit.

You don’t need to sell a product to find keywords to rank for. If you want to rank for phrases using “EFT” then find out what people are searching for, used that term in your titles and text and start getting links to those pages using those phrases.

Make sense?

Very good post Mikael, however I think you shouldn’t underestimate internal linking. It is essential to have internal linking so you can move link juice around your site to pages that have no external links. If you want proof of this just look how well Wikipedia does and how good it’s internal linking is.

Hi Chris, I didn’t say that internal linking isn’t useful. What I am saying is that they are not necessary to achieve high rankings and secondly they are worthless without external links coming in.

That means that if you are just starting out you will need to work on your external linking before you will ever benefit from internal linking. If there is no juice to pass around it won’t matter.

Please note that this series of posts are not for the professional SEO or webmaster that knows (and does) what is required. Instead it is for the 99.9% of the website owners out there that either don’t know or that might know but does nothing or very little (which is a huge part of them).

/Mikael

P.S. Regarding Wikipedia it is only as strong because of its incoming links. I agree that they do a great job of passing the juice around but it is still the strength of the incoming links that matter the most.

Hey Mikael.

I didn’t mean to offend, I just thought I’d promote some discussion and get any noob’s reading this to engage their thinking caps!!

I am in a similar situation though, I target my blog at “noobs” per se, which means any experienced webmaster will usually find the information quite basic, but I am hoping to ramp up the complexity once the basics are covered.

P.s. I told my friend (Mark – too shy to comment) of your blog, he’s a big fan!

Hi Chris, oh I’m sorry. I’m not offended in any way and I definitely appreciate discussions. We can all learn from it I if I can learn to express myself clearer I will only welcome the process.

As for trying to explain the basics for new people I find that it can be difficult because we are “further down the road” ourselves but it is also a valuable experience as it gets you thinking about why you do what you do.

And thank you for recommending my blog to Mark. I appreciate it :)

Mikael

Excellent! Thanks!

Hi Michael,

I have a question. I had a situation that my site was ranked 1 for a keyword which had about 40000 searches per month “broad”.
Even so, I received an average of 10 people a day. It means 300 visitors a month coming from that keyword.

Is it possible that for new sites which are ranked fast as number 1, google doesn’t give them all the visitors? Can google control that?

HI Ion,

No, that is not possible. What might be the issue is that you are using “broad”. You should always look at the “exact match” data. There can be huge differences between the two.

But there are several other factors that plays a part, but the biggest thing is definitely the broad vs. exact thing.
