HI Ion,

No, that is not possible. What might be the issue is that you are using "broad". You should always look at the "exact match" data. There can be huge differences between the two.

But there are several other factors that plays a part, but the biggest thing is definitely the broad vs. exact thing.

Hi Michael,

I have a question. I had a situation that my site was ranked 1 for a keyword which had about 40000 searches per month "broad".
Even so, I received an average of 10 people a day. It means 300 visitors a month coming from that keyword.

Is it possible that for new sites which are ranked fast as number 1, google doesn't give them all the visitors? Can google control that?

Hi Chris, oh I'm sorry. I'm not offended in any way and I definitely appreciate discussions. We can all learn from it I if I can learn to express myself clearer I will only welcome the process.

As for trying to explain the basics for new people I find that it can be difficult because we are "further down the road" ourselves but it is also a valuable experience as it gets you thinking about why you do what you do.

And thank you for recommending my blog to Mark. I appreciate it :)

Hey Mikael.

I didn't mean to offend, I just thought I'd promote some discussion and get any noob's reading this to engage their thinking caps!!

I am in a similar situation though, I target my blog at "noobs" per se, which means any experienced webmaster will usually find the information quite basic, but I am hoping to ramp up the complexity once the basics are covered.

P.s. I told my friend (Mark - too shy to comment) of your blog, he's a big fan!

Hi Chris, I didn't say that internal linking isn't useful. What I am saying is that they are not necessary to achieve high rankings and secondly they are worthless without external links coming in.

That means that if you are just starting out you will need to work on your external linking before you will ever benefit from internal linking. If there is no juice to pass around it won't matter.

Please note that this series of posts are not for the professional SEO or webmaster that knows (and does) what is required. Instead it is for the 99.9% of the website owners out there that either don't know or that might know but does nothing or very little (which is a huge part of them).

/Mikael

P.S. Regarding Wikipedia it is only as strong because of its incoming links. I agree that they do a great job of passing the juice around but it is still the strength of the incoming links that matter the most.

Very good post Mikael, however I think you shouldn't underestimate internal linking. It is essential to have internal linking so you can move link juice around your site to pages that have no external links. If you want proof of this just look how well Wikipedia does and how good it's internal linking is.

Hi Manshu, no I am not saying that they are not useful. I'm saying that they are not Necessary. There is a big difference. Internal linking get indeed improve your ranking but compared to external links is has little benefit.

You don't need to sell a product to find keywords to rank for. If you want to rank for phrases using "EFT" then find out what people are searching for, used that term in your titles and text and start getting links to those pages using those phrases.

Make sense?

So, internal links are not useful at all? This internal link business has always confused me.

Other question is that what if you optimize a blog like I do. I am not selling a particular product so I don't want to optimize on a set of specific keywords. But, I do want the posts of ETFs to show on ETF searches and such. What is the best way to go about that?

Thanks!
