How to Make Money with Adsense Placement

Hello there! If you are new here, you might want to subscribe to the RSS feed to make sure you don't miss a thing on RetireRichRoadmap.com!

If you are trying to make money with Google’s Adsense program then there are a lot of key elements that you will need to learn or take notice of in order to maximize your earnings from people clicking the ads.

To quickly explain what Adsense is and how you make money from it, it is basically you selling advertising space on your websites to people advertising through Google’s Adwords program. Google handles all the administration and the legal stuff and all you will need to do is take a little snippet of code and place on your website in one or more locations. Every time someone clicks on one of the ads shown Google will be the advertiser an amount and because you are providing the advertising space they will then pass on a smaller part of that income to you. This part can be anything from a few percentage to sixty percentage or more. Each click is different and you can never guess what you’re going to be paid.

In a future post I’ll go more into the details of how to increase the percentage amount you’re being paid by Google for each click so if you’re interested in learning how to do that be sure to sign up for the RSS feed. Being able to get a bigger slice of the “money pie” is actually one of the best and most profitable changes you can make to your website if you are monetizing it using Adsense.

Adsense Placement Strategy

One of the key elements to get people visiting your website to click your Adsense ads is to make sure that the ads are place in the right spot. If you place your ads in the bottom left (example) of your site you will find that most people don’t scroll down to the bottom and if they do they are more likely to look in the bottom right than in the bottom left side. It is a very little difference in placement but it will have huge impact on your CTR (Click Through Rate – The number of people clicking your ads per hundred visitors).

If you haven’t heard about Courtney Tuttle then I would encourage you to check out this post he wrote about placing Adsense ads over at The Keyword Academy. In the post he talks about placing the Adsense box just below the title of the post and how some people have been saying that you are not allowed to do that. I agree with Courtney that it is total rubbish and that the only concern you should have is whether you are misleading your visitors and are encouraging them to click the ads. If that is the case you are breaking the Google’s rules and guidelines for using Adsense and you should stop it immediately.

As show in the example on The Keyword Academy post this placement would actually be one of the better ones to use if you want to make money with Adsense. Because it is placed above the fold (meaning that people do not have to scroll the page to see it) and placed in the upper left of the screen that is something that people are very likely to notice when they come to your site. And you want people to notice it because if they don’t they’ll definitely never click the links and you’ll not make any money from them (using Adsense at least).

Another great test has been performed at the Adsense Master Plan website in the post about Higher Adsense CTR where you are shown three very similar placements but with very different results and only because the actual format of the ads were changed. I’ll cover how to make more money using different Adsense box sizes in a future post but you can get great inspiration from the post on the Adsense Master Plan website.

Top left or top middle and above the fold will always be the winners when it come to optimizing Adsense placement for an increase in Adsense earnings. One important thing to remember though is to always test what works best on your site. Depending on your audience and the way your site layout is you can find that some things will work better for you than others and testing is the only way to truly find out what works.
