How to Make Money with Aprils Fool
Four days ago we had yet another April 1st and as always the newspapers, media and the entire blogosphere were swamped with jokes and lies. One more extreme than the next! Personally I don’t really like the idea of lying to people, even though it is only this one time a year and you always end up telling that it is an Aprils fool joke. But since it has been like this for years and years then I thought that I might as well tell you a couple of ideas on how to make money with an Aprils fool joke.
Ways to Make Money
Besides the fact that the idea of Aprils fool is that it is supposed to be fun and make people laugh, it is also a great way to attract traffic to your website (I use website as I am guessing that you don’t own neither a newspaper nor a TV channel).
As you probably already know by now it can be worth a lot of money if you’re able to attract large amounts of traffic to your site and if you know how to profit from that traffic. I’m not going to go into the specific details on how you can monetize traffic on your site as that is a huge topic and something that I will cover in future posts here on this blog (subscribe to the RSS feed if you haven’t already).
What I can tell you is that the traffic you’ll get from creating a buzz worthy Aprils fool joke will most likely not be easily converted into buyers on their first visit to your site. They are there because you have created something that is fun, extreme or outrageous and they want to see what it is.
Your best option for turning these people into a profit is to get them to leave their email address. You can make them a hard to resist offer as a pop-up box when they leave your site and when they give you their email you will be able to follow up on them afterwards and on an ongoing basis (until they unsubscribe).
Unless you have had people give you other information than they email address it can be difficult to know what they will be most interested in buying from you. All you know is that they came to your site to see something that was fun, extreme or outrageous (whatever you can up with as the Aprils fool).
If you can give them more of the same kind they will probably be interested and you can come up with ways to make money from it. Whether it is selling funny/extreme DVDs or having them signup for a monthly membership site filled with fun/extreme audios and videos you will probably have to send out about 7 emails on average to get people to buy from you.
When you want to make money from an Aprils fool joke you’ll have to find ways to not only make it go viral (spread from one person to the next) in order to attract large amount of traffic but you will also have to figure out how you can monetize that traffic by 1) giving them an offer they can’t refuse by giving you their email and 2) find ways to build a relationship with these people via ongoing email correspondence so that they will be more likely to buy from you over time.
In conclusion you can say that the problem of how to make money from Aprils fool comes down to converting untargeted traffic into buyers by having them leave their email and figuring out what it is that they will be interested in so that you can sell that to them.
