Just Do Something And Do It Now
Sometimes I think that it isn’t that great at all that we have the Internet at our fingertips. The huge load of information has left more people paralyzed than you would imagine. I am a big fan of getting as much information as possible “out there” but I know the feeling of being overwhelmed and stuck all too well and it is a silent killer.
Now this is not just in the online world but rather ESPECIALLY in the online world. There are so many people struggling to make money online and the reason they are having a hard time is most of the times not a matter of missing information but rather an overload of information and missing action because of paralysis.
How many of you have asked yourself (and others) the question of “what niche should I go into?” or “should I become an affiliate marketer or make money with Adsense?”
I know that I have asked myself those questions a ton of times and each time I did, it was because I had read some new information about the thing that I wasn’t doing (aff. marketing vs. Adsense). Luckily for me I was not a slave to the biggest problem of them all… The one where you are doing nothing.
With any business, be it online or offline, you NEED to take action. It doesn’t matter if what you do is not the most effective way or even the right way but you must ACT.
So many people will do nothing because they aren’t sure what niche to go into or what kind of method they should use to make money. SERIOUSLY GUYS AND GIRLS…. Just pick one. It doesn’t matter what. You need to start doing something and do it now because if you wait you’ll get bypassed and run over.
Heck if you still can’t decide then let me do it for you:
- Make a website about health and fitness
- Start monetizing it with Google Adsense
Make a commitment to yourself that you will keep working on this consistently and without trying anything else for the next 12 months. Yes you can read material that will help you become better, but ONLY if it is related to Adsense or Health and Fitness. Everything else is banned.
Now you know what to do and what market to go into. Now all you need to do is start acting and do it Now!
To Your Success,
Mikael

Very good point, Mikael. I sometimes hear from people that I should have done “this” or “that”, and my response is usually “at least I did something.” I don’t sit around waiting for perfection; if I did, I’d never get anything done.

Hi Mitch, it’s funny how so many people that haven’t achieved their life dreams are ready to tell you what to do and not to do, right?
Taking action is vital and even if we make huge mistakes it doesn’t matter as long as we learn from them. If we repeat the mistake then we’re stupid

Mikael, I’m going to sound like a politician here, I agree with you sometimes. I have experienced Internet burnout at times. Even thought I want to continue writing or tweaking, when these times hit my quality suffers, the discipline I had to develop was knowing when to back off and do Nothing, just for a day to recharge.
Fortunately this doesn’t happen to often because of the stimulating nature of the Internet business, but when it does the action I have too take is shut down, take a walk and do nothing. That day off pays off because you return fresh and renewed ready for round two.
As you mentioned information overload can lead to frustration, stress and wasted time. That’s just my 2 cents, it works for me and we know everybody is different.

Ric, I don’t even think we disagree here. If I understand you correctly you are only feeling these burnouts because you are actually doing something. I am by no means an advocate for working all the time as I believe reflection can be just as valuable. However if someone only reflects but never acts they’ll never get anywhere

I think that there are probably quite a few people who fall into this trap. They know they want to do something, but not sure what, so they hit the net to do some research and then suffer from information freeze.

Oh that really made me laugh, your “Heck if you still can’t decide then let me do it for you.” I must have a strange sense of humour! It’s so true though – within reason it doesn’t matter what you pick as long as you do something. You could research forever and still not know whether it’ll work until you try. It’s also easy to get sidetracked when you read about how so and so made loads of money doing this one thing, so I think your advice about doing nothing else for 12 months and not even reading about it is so good. You’re always going to get new ideas in this game but you could end up with loads of websites making you nothing if you don’t focus on one. There are so many things to try and test and tweak that it takes 12 months anyway (unless you work 24 hours a day!).
Cheers, Chloe

I am a great believer in action. You can’t let perfect come in the way of action. You gotta try and see how far it takes you. And then think through it. Here is a related thought from Scott Adams (creator of Dilbert).

This is my biggest problem Mikael! I start a project and get sidetracked incredibly easily because I’ve read other reports about what I’m NOT doing. So I lose interest in my current project and start building ideas for the next one.
I’ve spoken with a friend recently and he has given me EXACTLY the same pep talk. Pick one and focus on it solely. It’s got to be the way otherwise everything ends up piecemeal.

I feel your pain Matt. I’ve been there myself (and I still am at times).
The best solution for me has been to remove all the distractions (subscriptions) + creating a daily plan for what I MUST do before I can “play around”.

Hi Mikael,
I think one of the most common reason why people get sidetracked is because they (or we) are always seeking for the easiest way to make money as fast as possible.
When someone find something good, they start to prepare themselves, realize that they need a 1 year plan… and then boom! They receive an email telling about how someone just like them without experience found a method incredibly easy to get money almost overnight “even if you don’t have experience”…
Guess what happened to the 1 year plan…
After purchasing that new great plan, they realize that it’s not that great or maybe it is, but then again to make it work better, they should do a 1 year plan along side, etc…
In the end, 1 year passed by and they still haven’t made up their mind.
It doesn’t matter what you are involved with, nothing happen until you take action.

You sound just like an email I received
…”it happened overnight….” *LOL*
I’ve never heard of anyone that didn’t get sidetracked doing online marketing and it think it is part of the process. The only thing that matters is that you keep doing something until you finally learn not to get (as) sidetracked. Whether that will take a short time or a long time will be individual. For me it seems like it has taken a long time

Getting from point A to point B on the internet highway and the road to success usually does not take the shortest path. There are so many distractions.
When you are a one person show as most of us are, there are so many things to do to become an all around success. However it is all part of the process.
How many emails do we get every day with an offer for a product and then an opportunity to be an affiliate for it? How often do we get thrown off by one of these offers and the chance to make 40-50 or more per sale?
It is easy to become distracted. Building up a network of followers can become time consuming, too.
You have to really enjoy what you do to stay with this. However we choose to accept the challenge, and even though we might take the scenic route and the detours, several of us do get to our destination.
