Lenses and Hubpages – The Brothers of Article Marketing
Last week I wrote a few blog posts about the importance of working on getting incoming links to your new website and one of the best ways that I have found to do this if you are just starting out online is to go with the article marketing approach as you can start off slowly and still get visitors directly from the article directories even before your site starts to rank in the search engines.
I don’t know if you are different from me but my guess is that what you want to see for your new website is as much traffic as you can get and preferably as quickly as you possibly can. Waiting weeks or months for traffic to show up because the search engines will need to index your site and then start to rank it where they find it appropriate. I hate waiting and I am sure you do too and that is why I believe article marketing is such a great way to start out.
Another “kind” of article marketing is what you might have heard of as something called “Lenses” and “Hubpages”. These are very similar to writing articles and distributing them except for the fact that these articles will not be distributed to a lot of other webmasters. Instead they are placed on high traffic sites like www.squidoo.com (lenses) and www.hubpages.com (hubpages).
Here you can start creating lenses and hubpages that will not only link back to your website (and thereby have your site rank higher in the search engines) but if what you have written is high quality then you will start to see some traffic come from those sites to your website.
The reason I think that it is better to start off with article marketing is that I find it to be easier to get started with if you are brand new at this and also because lenses and hubpages will often have to be a fair bit longer in order to really start pulling in some traffic. But since it is still similar in nature I call it the “brothers of article marketing”.

I’ve actually dabbled in the Squidoo arena quite recently. Surprisingly, I got my lenses locked! Must have been the topic (health related), which I think they’re extra cautious about due to the potential abuse.

You did? Was it only the lens or the entire account? If I were you I would ask why just to be sure what went wrong.

Yeah, first time out too.
It was just the lenses though. I can’t help but feel it’s either a false positive or something more sinister (like the competition alerting the Squidoo gods — I’m paranoid that way). There are tons of other sites with tons of other information.
Here’s something else that’s weird: three of my lenses outrank the first two lenses of other people. What’s up with that?
I’ve heard that if you ask Squidoo for a manual review and they consider it spam, they’ll block your account. I don’t know, maybe it’s worth the risk considering the oddity of my rankings and that it’s only one account.

I would definitely do that. If you do have your account disabled you can always create another one. If you truly feel that they have made a mistake then I can see why they should do that though…

Yep, I just sent it off, so my fingers are crossed. We’ll see what happens in about 15 days according to their terms.
