Maximizing Social Bookmarking Benefits
Today will be the final part in the 3 parts series about social bookmarking as a way to build 1-way backlinks to your website. Previously I have explained the basics of what social bookmarking is and yesterday I wrote about how you can start getting these 1-way backlinks to your website.
But before I left you yesterday I promised to tell you of a way to get even more benefits from these social bookmarking sites and the list of the 20 do-follow sites that I referred to yesterday.
I am going to draw something for you today and I hope that you will bear with me as it might be a little complex in nature but I feel that the visual approach will be the best way to explain it.
To be fair this was actually an idea I got from reading a blog post over at Earners Blog.
1 Social Bookmarking Site Linking to Many
I hope that we agree by now that it is important to get links to your website because links are what will help your site improve its ranking and strength. The more links the better (that is the simple explanation).
But besides the amount of links you will want to have links coming from sites that have some strength themselves (have incoming links to them) because the more strength they have the more they are able to pass on to your site.
Now that we have the 20 social bookmarking accounts we talked about yesterday we basically have 20 sites that we would love to have as much strength as they possibly can because then they can pass it on to us.
So let us imagine a scenario like this picture (each bubble is a social bookmarking account):
In the picture above the Social Bookmarking Account 1 provides a link to all the other 19 accounts providing every one of them with an incoming link and a little extra strength. It is not much but since the account in itself is at an Authority website it will carry more strength than if it were a simple PR0 blog that we were hosting ourselves.
Imagine that all 20 sites individually link to the other 19 sites… (I’m not going to draw this because that is A LOT of arrows) 
The result will be that each account has 19 incoming links from a page within an Authority website. “Yes” the links will be reciprocal and “yes” reciprocal links it not nearly as beneficial as 1-way links but they will still help.
If you do not like that structure you can create whatever structure you like. You can link them in a circle so that every account will only get one incoming link and have one outgoing link.
For more structures I would like to refer you to Michael Campbell’s “Revenge of the Mininet”. It is a great read but it might get a little technical for some. If you are just starting out I would recommend that you waited a while before reading it because it can be rather confusing.
So there you have it. This is one way that you can create your own little linking network and get backlinks to your sites by using the social bookmarking tools.
There are both paid and free tools that will help you speed up the process but if this is your first time I recommend that you do it manually to fully understand what is going on and so that you can see and feel the structure of “the beast”

I started reading you blog since last one month. I enjoy your insights. I one thing that intrigues me is the quality of the traffic from social networking? By quality I mean its worth on ability to convert that traffic in money. What are you thoughts?

To be honest with you I would never use social bookmarking for the direct traffic that it can generate. I would only do it for the link value

Hi Mikael,
Say we want our money site to get better rankings, so we create these 20 bookmarking accounts and link to our money site from each of them. Then we link all the accounts in a circle so that every account will get one incoming link from another bookmarking account.
My concern is will it look unnatural to SEs as they crawl each of our bookmarking account (which are now linked together) since each of them is linking to the same money site(s)? Should we be instead varying which money site(s) we link to from each account or does it matter?

Geoff, well the best thing that you can do is to make everything look as natural as possible. The more obvious things are created and the more massively it is done, the more likely you’ll be “discovered”.
Now as you probably know there is not “right” or “wrong” way to do things and sometimes you can get away with being very aggressive and sometimes you can’t. There is always a risk.
So the best recommendation I can give you is to make everything seems as natural as you possible can.
