How to Get Social Bookmark Backlinks and Why You Want Them – Part 1
I was recently asked what social bookmarking is and why you want to use it for your sites and therefore I thought it would be a good idea to make it into a blog posts so that other people that didn’t know could benefit from it.
Since there are so many things to the concept of social bookmarks and how you can use them to build links for your sites I’ll be writing more than one blog post to cover as much as possible.
For this post I’ll be touching on the basics of it and in the following posts I’ll go a little more into how you can be a little more advanced and how you can automate some or all of the process.
Basic Social Bookmarks
As the word says these are bookmarks that are created online. Bookmarks are a reference to a place that you find valuable or interesting in one way or another. The best way to explain it might be to call it the “online version of your browser favorites“.
What they will do is help you save websites that you come across while surfing online that you would want to return to at some point. Instead of adding them to your favorites folder you can instead (often) click a button and add the bookmark to your social bookmarking service.
When you want to find the sites again you can login into your account with the particular service and see all the bookmarks that you have added over time.
One of the benefits with the online way of storing the information is that you can access them at any computer in the world if it has an Internet connection. So you won’t have to bring your personal laptop to bring your favorite websites.
Secondly you can share these bookmarks with other users that might find them interesting and you can see what sites other people have found to be interesting within the niches that you are interested in.
Initial Traffic
The sharing of bookmarks is what has made services like “Digg” and “StumbleUpon” huge online success stories but they are just a small fraction of the bookmarking sites that are out there.
As a website owner your agenda is a little different than the regular user because you would want as many people as possible to bookmark your site because you would then get even more traffic from people that are interested in what you do because your site would rank better within the “popular sites list” of the individual social bookmarking sites.
Normally you would only want to use one bookmarking site for your favorites because it will save you time to have all of your favorites places listed in one single spot. But as a website owner you can probably see the benefit of having your site listed in all the bookmarking sites that you can come across as that would potentially bring you more traffic from people that were looking for something in your niche within the bookmarking sites.
Let me give you an example to make it a little clearer…
The picture below is from StumbleUpon and it shows the top rated sites within the Health Category (click picture for larger view):
As a website owner you will want to have your site listed in the top because that will bring you more direct traffic (people coming to your site for information).
But StumbleUpon is just one in many…
Imagine the direct traffic you could get if your site was listed in the top on a lot of these bookmarking sites. There are stories of sites like Digg and StumbleUpon sending thousands of visitors to sites and if that was your site it would be fantastic.
However this is not what I am going to teach you because there is another way that you can benefit from these tools and without having to get into the top rated lists (which can be difficult).
The benefits comes from creating backlinks but I’m not going to tell you have to do that in this article. That will be the topic for the next one but at least now you know a little more about social bookmarking.
To Your Success,
Mikael

I have not fared with bookmarking sites at all. I think I don’t have enough knowledge them about it at all and sometimes wonder if they are a thing of the past and no longer matter. Will look forward to this series.
