The Steps Needed for an Adsense Website

By Mikael | 274 views

To follow up on the post I wrote yesterday about the importance of knowing where you’re stuck I decided to write this post. I’ve received questions from struggling readers that (just like I was) have been online for years but still have a hard time sticking to something that will work for them.

This post will not be a show all and tell all but I hope that it will bring you a little more understanding of the process that I personally use when figuring out how to start a new Adsense website. Each point can potentially be THE place that you’re currently struggling and by walking through this list I hope that you’ll find that point and be able to move past it by searching this blog or Google for a solution.

1. Doing Market Research

Before entering into any market with any type of website I do market research to verify that there are enough interest and that people are actually spending money in that market. If there is no interest or if people are only looking for free stuff then you’ll be wasting your time attacking that market.

2. Doing Keyword Research

Finding some initial keywords will show you whether you’ll be able to attract decent traffic from the search engines. If there isn’t a decent amount of traffic you will have a hard time making money from Google Adsense as that income is highly based on the amount of traffic your site gets.

3. Evaluating Your Competition

When you know that there are keywords attracting a nice amount of traffic you will need to do some research on your competition. If the competition is too fierce then you might not want to dive in despite the fact that money are being spent and there is plenty of traffic.

4. Creating a Keyword List

Now it is time to create a list of the keywords you’ll be trying to target with your new site. The keywords will be based on the amount of traffic they’ll send as well as the level of competition. The list is extremely important as this will make or break your site’s initial success. Most people try to do this very quickly and are therefore not seeing any results.

5. Finding and Registering a Domain Name

I’m guessing that most of you would have registered a domain name way sooner than this but it is my experience that it is better to wait until you know that you have the right market as well as some good keywords that you can compete for BEFORE you find the domain you want to use.

6. Getting Appropriate Hosting

Next on this list will be to find some hosting. There are a lot of different factors that are important when picking the right hosting solution and as a rule of thumb I don’t suggest that you go for the cheapest solution as it might end up costing you everything.

7. Installing WordPress

Now I use WordPress because it is free, easy and extremely flexible. If you’re more into static html sites that can work just as well but I would personally always recommend WordPress and especially if you’re new at this.

8. SEO The Site

Next you will need to find the perfect theme, install the necessary plugins and make sure that the site is optimized for the search engines. If you have done a poor job at optimizing your site you’ll have to work a lot harder to achieve good rankings in the search engines. Most free (and paid) WordPress themes are NOT optimized for search engines.

9. Writing and Posting Content

It matters a great deal that you know how to write your content so that it will fit your readers, fit the search engines and be written so that you will make the most from Adsense. There are many ways to get content written for your site as you can do it yourself or have someone else do t for you.

10. Posting the content

If you don’t know how to post content you’ll need to learn that and you will also want to decide on a posting schedule for your new website. It is important to keep the schedule that you decide on for optimal performance.

11. Install Adsense and Test It

Now you’re ready to sign up for Adsense and insert the code on your website. Once inserted you will need to set up some tests to make sure that you’re getting the most out of it. There are some basic rules that you should follow for starters but there will always be tweaks that you’ll need to make.

12. Final Step Is Linkbuilding

This step is a big one as it is all about doing off-site SEO. Getting the right links to your website will have a huge impact on whether or not you’ll be successful fast (if at all). This step alone could probably be divided into ten or twenty individual steps but if you have gotten this far I am sure you have some ideas to get started.

Conclusion

Each of the steps mentioned above are important and the order in which they are listed are important as well. What I suggest is that if you would want to make money with Adsense you start from point number one and learn how to do that step. There is plenty of information available on the topic so that is no excuse.

When you have learned and partially mastered the first step you should move on to the next. But NOT anytime sooner! This is crucial as it is probably one of the places that the most people fail. They try to do everything as fast as possible and skip corners wherever they can. Don’t do this! It will only have you waste the time you spend as no chain is stronger than the weakest link.

I hope that this list has been useful and that you now know where you’re at and what you’ll need to do next to move on.

To Your Success,
Mikael

Very nicely outlined steps Mikael!

I absolutely agree with you – it doesn’t take a genius to figure out that following a few steps CONSISTENTLY does produce results and steps above is exactly what many need.

Thank you Alex. Well maybe not a genius but definitely someone that has realized that CONSISTENCY is the name of the game. And as we both know… most don’t get this.

My hosting is pretty cheap, yet I have no problems what so ever. Cheap hosting doesn’t mean bad hosting if you can find a company with good support and service. I switched hosting providers two or three times before I settled on one, and I’ve been with them for two years or so.

You’re right Max that cheap doesn’t have to mean “bad” and you can also always argue what “cheap” is.

All I am saying it that you will need to do proper due diligence before settling on one.

Mikael, I’m just delving into linking. I know the traffic from digg and stumble are not good for adsense sites, but is it worth to post there for the link? Also, I read multiple links from same IP count as one, such as writing articles for ezinearticle.

Thanks….Ric

Hi Ric, well a few links from the major social sites will definitely not harm you but I would want to spend too much time on it if I were you.

As for links from the same IP that is true. However you must remember that EzineArticles will also send you high quality traffic directly + people can take your article from EA and put it on their own sites and in return provide you with more links from different IPs.

Personally, I’d say the 2nd step is the most important. I’ve seen many people just find a “top adsense keywords list”, take one of the keywords from the top of the list, slap it onto their blog with some Adsense ads, and expect to make money. Those keywords are very, very hard to rank for. Impossible might be a better word.

Thus, researching keywords before you jump in is very important. Great post Mikael!

Mikael,
Is there a way you’d recommend getting the keyword research? I mean, how does one actually go about identifying the perfect keywords? It’s one of the points that “I realise is important, but kind of put to the back because I’m not entirely sure how to do it”.

EDIT – Ignore this Mikael, I’ve just spotted your adsense keyword research post. I’ll read that and perhaps search more thoroughly before posting next time :D

Matt, following the steps outlined in the kwa that I mentioned in my latest post will be my best advice. It is simple to follow and easy to understand but the most important thing is that it is PROVEN to work.
