Why Families Should Talk About Money as Financial Education for All

By Mikael | 1,074 views

If you have been following this blog for even a little while you are probably aware that I think it is sad that most of our society knows very little about money and personal finances and because of this there are millions of people struggling to make ends meet. And I am only talking about the Western world here.

One of the reasons for this problem to even exist might be that very few of us have ever been taught anything about money beside that we should get a good education and go find a job so we can work for money. There is no Money101 class in the schools and only if you take special courses will you even know what debit, credit and a balance sheet is. How can we expect to know about something if it was never taught to us?

Then there is the written media and the television news programs. At first glance they seem to be teaching us a little but the fact is that they are only trying to sell their story and unfortunately most of these stories are more interesting than they are true but since they are all that we have got we tend to believe them and who can blame us?

In most homes money is not something that is talked about and especially not in families where money is tight. I am not pointing fingers here because who can blame anyone from not wanting to talk about something that hurts to talk about? And if you’re in financial trouble you probably lack the knowledge about money in the first place and then what is there to talk about? Besides maybe complaining that there is never enough money and the rich people and bankers are to blame.

Where Can Financial and Money Education Begin?

I think that if we could just get more people to talk openly about money at home and with friends we would be off to a great start. I understand that uneducated people can’t teach each other all there is to know but the sum total of their knowledge can add up. And even if you have failed in your financial matters and have gone bankrupt you will still have something valuable to share. You for one will be able to tell people what they should avoid doing because you know where it leads.

Besides the fact that we could all start sharing knowledge and stop being afraid of money there is another very valuable benefit of talking and teaching about money and financial matters. If you are to teach something to others in a way that they can understand it, YOU will have to understand it completely. Studies have shown that teaching something to others is the best way to ever learn something because you are so very focused and determined to understand and comprehend that it will sink in.

Do You, Your Friends and Your Family Talk About Money?

In my family money wasn’t a taboo as such but it wasn’t something that was talked a lot about (besides when there was something that we couldn’t afford) and it was definitely not something that was being taught. My parents never read books to become smarter in financial and money matters and I am pretty sure that they have never ever attended any kind of course or seminar teaching about financial matters.

How is it in your family?

Do you talk about money and financial matters or are you like my family or maybe even worse? Do you agree or disagree that talking about money is vitally important to ever be able to have them and hold on to them? Let me know your thoughts and comments below. I’m looking forward to getting a debate going.

To Your Success,
Mikael

I think the crisis that we are in right now may do something to get PErsonal Finance 101 in schools, as a required course.

We are in agreement 100%. TSchools teach us how to make money, how to get into debt, but nothing about saving or investing. How many people still think a mutual fund is not invested in stocks? Sometimes I think our system intentionally set it up this way so we would be dependent on the financial Guru’s. Some people will wake up and learn about investments, but human nature dictates that most will revert to old habits and continue to pay advisers for poor performance.

@Jason, well I would say that the crisis is just a small part of it. If people were more educated they would be a lot more worried that there actually isn’t enough money in social security to ever pay for their retirement.

@Ric, so very true. It’s just like people believing that diversifying in Mutual funds is actually diversifying. *LOL* As you say, “it’s still paper money”

Hi Mikael,

This is an interesting topic!
Personally, I studied 12 years at school and 4 years at university. In 16 years nobody teached me the culture money. The only thing I was always told by the grown ups and by my parents was: You have to work hard to earn money! In fact I agree with this statement. But this statement has two aspects:

1. You work hard and make little money.

2. You work hard and make a lot of money.

So everybody in my country was working hard to make little money, and this is because they didn’t have money education.

I live in Moldova. My country was a part of Former Soviet Union.

Thanks,
Ion

Ion,

I think that another problem is that who should teach us about money? Most teachers don’t know anything about money and that is why most teachers are poor people (no offense).

As for working hard I agree that it is important but it is even more important what it is that you are working ON. If you spend all your time and effort on things that will get you nowhere you are wasting time (aka your life).

I’m not sure I know where Moldova is located but I am guessing that since you were part of the Soviet Union you were also taught Communism, or am I wrong?

Mikael

Mikael,

Moldova is a small country of about 4 million people which is situated between Romania and Ukrain.
Well I wasn’t taught communism, but our parents have learned communism.

My question is: How do you find the money education should be? I know you did MLM and you might still be doing. I know MLM is providing very good money education.

I think kids in rich families do have money education, and in poor families are not.

Well I’m located in Denmark (5.5 million) so to me 4 millions isn’t that small :)

The reason I asked about communism is that it is so different from capitalism and I’m guessing that money and entrepreneurship wasn’t on the daily agenda :)

I’m not into MLM anymore (still buying the products though), but for money education I don’t think MLM is the way. MLM is great for personal development and for that reason I think everyone should spend a few years in MLM, but for money education I would recommend books, audios and seminars.

What I do is find authors that have done the things they teach. I want it from the horse’s mouth so to speak. If you want to get started I can recommend two books:

The Richest Man in Babylon – by George Clason
Rich Dad, Poor Dad – by Robert Kiyosaki

Both are very easy to read and will give some great foundation to work on.

I have read Rich Dad, Poor Dad – by Robert Kiyosaki twice. I also did one year of MLM. This was a kind of good experience for me.
I will try to find the second book.

You are right Mikael. Capitalism and Communism are so different and money and entrepreneurship where things only very few people knew about.

Things changed! And you see that Roberts Kiyosaki’s book is not new for me:) Nowadays we also have seminars and books. I also attended some seminars as I also want to learn the way you said. People just have to have the interest to it.

Personally me, I don’t think Communism has a big affect on my education. I don’t want to say communism taught people bad due to respect to people who had lived it.

Hi Ion, awesome. Then I guess you’re well on your way already. My best advice for studying is to keep finding more books to read and re-read.

I was not implying that you didn’t have books and seminars :)

I’m not going to say that communism is bad and capitalism is good and vice versa. They are both philosophies and like religion you can’t really say that something is right or wrong.

But I am sure that we can agree that if you want to become a entrepreneur, communism is not a wise choice :)

In my family money was a dirty word and was never spoken about. To this day (in my 30′s) I have NO idea what my father earns, not even a ballpark. He never earned massive amounts of money but never spoke about it. In fact, he never spoke about working hard for money at all – I just saw him come home from work tired and assumed that that’s what on had to do.

My mother on the other hand has always been the “right then, what can we do to make money” person and she always looked my father and myself for the action. She was the ‘ideas’ person.

Recently becoming a father has made this more interesting. Do I discuss money with my son??

Hi Matt,

I would say by all means do so. Talking about money and (even better) education him (and yourself) will be something that will benefit your both greatly.

To improve and develop a skill one will have to use it.

Mikael

You are absolutely right. There needs to be better education about managing finances and making money in family.

I am originally from India. I have been in USA for last 13 years but one thing I have noticed change back in India is that in colleges and offices young people (fresh graduates or still learning) are give a virtual money to manage.

They can invest this virtual money and build a portfolio to manage it. Then in the end there are some prizes.

So they make it a nice competition and at the same time educate the young crowd who can make a lot of difference tomorrow.

All of us really need to take care of this when we raise our children, I had also the same problem, I never knew how much the dollar worth until I grow up, and this is why I was spending money not in it’s place!
