These Are the Best Keywords to Target When Making Money with Adsense

Winning Adsense KeywordsIf this is the first post you read on this blog I want to encourage you to go check out the post I did two days ago about why high paying keywords suck and the post I did yesterday about why low paying keywords suck just as much.

If you have already read them then let’s move on. So if high paying keywords and low paying keywords suck then guess what I am going to suggest you target? (HINT HINT…)

The keywords in the middle range naturally!

But what is “the middle range” when it comes to keywords?

Well you can’t really put a price on it as it is more the method you use when you choose the keywords you want to target. Let me try to explain with an example:

Let’s say that you have found a niche where you know people are buying stuff and there are a lot of Adwords advertisers competing for the first 8 ad spots in the ad listings. When there is a lot of competition then prices per click will naturally go up.

Most webmasters targeting keywords to make money with Adsense will take Google’s Keyword tool, enter their keyword, sort the list to get the highest CPC keywords and then choose to target the top 20 (or at most top 50) keywords on the list. Some will add more to their sites but VERY few will ever be able to actively target more than 50 keywords. If you don’t believe me then try to ask yourself how many keywords you are personally ACTIVELY trying to get good rankings for? If you can work on more than 50 at the same time you’re a MONSTER! (and I don’t believe you….. unless you outsource the job).

But what about the last 150 keywords on the list? Who are actively targeting those? VERY few and this is your big chance. I’m not saying that this is going to be a walk in the park but you’ll stand a really good chance at getting top 5 positions in Google if you’re going actively after the keywords below the top 50 high paying ones.

Does this mean that they are not getting any traffic or that they have a low CPC? Not at all! You will find plenty of keywords that are getting thousands of searches a month and they can easily have CPC prices of $10-$20, which means that you can get clicks that’ll pay you from $1 to $5 each.

Personally I’ll never target keywords that has a CPC below $6 because I want to be able to get at least $1 per click. It doesn’t always work because other factors play a part but most of the time it works great.

So there you have it! It isn’t magic and now you can’t even call it “a secret” but what you can call it is “a great strategy that works”.

To Your Success,
Mikael

An informative post Mikael, but if you know me by now you know how slack I am and even though I have this information I probably won’t use it. I’ve always known, by the small amounts the clicks earn me, that I am not using the right keywords but I haven’t the time to do the proper research.

Man, if I had the money, I would hire someone to find me those keywords and all I would have to do is what I love, blogging. Dream on huh?

@Sire, I’m sure you’re right that a lot of people won’t use the information and as you say you yourself might be one of these very people. But I am curious as to why you don’t feel that you have the time?

We all have 24 hours a day so in that aspect no two people are different. Billionaires have 24 hours in a day and so do the poorest of the poor. It is only a matter of how we are spending our time on.

I’m sure you know this and I am not trying to get on your case but I am curious as to what thoughts you have as I know that many people feel like that.

Well, you see I already run my own business which takes most of my time. Then I have a family which also requires some of my time. Then there are the 7 blogs plus other sites that I work on when I can.

Things have changed recently that means I have to spend more time on the business as I can’t afford to let that go astray as it is the main bread winner. If all I had to worry about was the blog and it’s marketing then yes I would take the time for keyword research and such, but as things lie that is the least important thing on my daily schedule of things that I have to get done.

Oh, yes, I also like to occasionally put my feet up and watch a good movie. ;)

I completely understand (been there done that). I don’t know how many hours you spend on your business but I know that I’ve personally spent 12 hours a day on a job (incl. transportation). I’ve tried the “working on multiple websites” approach and I agree… you just don’t have the time to do that.

But what has worked for me is to focus. Take the best site and run with it. Spend all your time working on that site until it’s income will enable you to outsource the work to someone else (you can get a full time employee overseas for as little as $300-$400 per month).

If you plan your day and your week and follow through (skip TV for a few weeks or months…. yes it IS possible) you’ll soon see how things will grow by themselves because you’ll then have someone else spend +160 hours a month expanding it.

If you can spare the $300-$400 now you can outsource immediately.

Sure all that is possible, if making money online was that important to me. Truth is that it isn’t. I love learning about the ways of doing things but implementing them isn’t all that important.

Truth be told, blogging for me has to be fun, and doing all the keyword search and all that stuff would simply take the fun out of it. I know some people online who strive for that that part of marketing, but it’s not for me.

Still, I thank you for all the ideas, and I’m sure it won’t go to waste as there will be other who will read this post that can make good use of it.

But then you’re not “slack”. Then you choose not to do what you learn and that’s completely different.

Have you ever tried searching for lists of good keywords? People are actually selling them you know and they are often not that expensive. But again if money is not important to you then you don’t need any particular keywords because it won’t matter if you make money or not, right?

I wouldn’t say money wasn’t important to me, just the money I make from blogging isn’t an issue. I blog for enjoyment and if I make some bucks along the way it’s just an added bonus.

I understand but then you’ll not need to think about what keywords to target as it won’t matter, right?

Let’s say that I do use keywords but I don’t research them. I will write a post, and then after I have finished I will select certain words from the post that I think will make good search engine fodder and they become my keywords. The process takes probably less than thirty seconds. Once done I cease to worry about whether or not I made the right choice as it was the content of the post that mattered and not the keyword selection.

Truly informative post Mikael. I wanted to expertise in adsense and you have thrown enormous light on the major areas. Easy to understand but this is too much info for me to take it in one shot. I have to read this twice to understand entirely. However Thanks!
Alan :)
