Do You Think That “Thinking” Is Working?
Most entrepreneurs (both online and offline) are extremely innovative people and most have more ideas than they will ever be able to complete or even start. Does this sound familiar to you?
Have you ever found yourself in a situation where you thought about things like:
- Writing different ebooks and sell them
- Adding opt-in forms
- Starting a new blog
- Creating mini niche websites and monetize them with Adsense
- Building review websites with affiliate links
- Creating strategic partnerships with other people in your niches
- Doing massive linkbuilding campaigns using social media, video, article marketing……
- Wanting to do guest posts on other sites for links and traffic
Obviously the list could go on and on because there is an unlimited amount of ideas that you could start, improve, test, outsource, write down, brainstorm…..
I think you get the idea, right?
Stop Thinking, Start Doing
Now there is nothing wrong with coming up with new ideas and concepts and without it there would be no innovation. But the reason I wanted to write this post is that I am sure some of you are just like me and that you also convince yourself of having worked a great deal on your online business because it FEELS like it.
I personally think about my online business 5-6 times an hour (18 hours a day) because I am constantly thinking of new things that I could do or old things that I should have done but didn’t get around to doing.
When I reach the weekend I feel like I have put in a great effort even though I might only have put in 3 hours of true work. The reason is that my brain thinks that because I have thought about my business 450 times from Monday to Friday, then I must have spent a lot of time on it.
What To Do About It
So should you stop thinking about your business? Absolutely not!
But you must be truthful to yourself when you look back at your work week and tell your brain that you actually worked less than 3 hours instead of the 450x 5 minutes that it thinks that you worked because you thought of it.
If you can learn how to do this you will be able to look back (and forward) and be realistic about what it takes to become successful. Most people can accept/understand that 3 hours of work might not lead to great results whereas 450x 5 minutes (37.5 hours) should definitely create results that were noticeable.
The optimal solution would naturally be to start working more on your business and to think less and I am sure that we’re all striving to do this, but becoming honest and truthful to yourself is a giant leap in the right direction and will give you a totally new clarity on your business’ coming path.
To Your Success,
Mikael

well, there should be one – one with thinking and working, without thinking you can’t work, and you can’t work, if you will always think, so make a way between to think and to work, that will be nice one.

Hi Frank,
Well I see your point and you are naturally right. However since it is impossible to do anything without using your brain (just like you can’t work without breathing) I didn’t feel that it was worth mentioning.
Anyway the point was that we all need to be true to ourselves and realize how much (or how little) we actually work.

Hi Mikael,
You were right, many entrepreneurs just have bag full of ideas and when it comes to implementation they take a backseat.
Sometimes I also plan to do something new to my blog and get lots of information, but then I forget it completely. To get a escape from this I take the use of motivational quotes. They help a lot in getting you moving on.
Thanks for this encouraging post.

How utterly right you are Mikael. I’m so guilty of this. I sit sometimes with my laptop, knowing EXACTLY what I need to do and end up thinking about other things. When my battery starts to fail I think “great, a successful evening” when in fact I’ve done pretty much nothing.
If only there were more hours in the day…

Hi Matt,
Seems like we’re very similar on that point. The problem is that more hours will not help if we spend it on more thoughts. Action, action, action is the name of the game we need to play to win.

I agree that it’s important to keep moving forward, action being MUCH better than inaction.
The problem comes when the desire to keep moving forward stops you from taking a minute to determine in which DIRECTION to move!
If you have not already read it, I would highly recommend David Allen’s book “Getting things done”, it has certainly helped me to determine what my priorities are at any given point.

Very true Sanjeev.
I haven’t read David Allen’s book but it is on my wish list with Amazon. Thanks for recommending it.

Yes, I am guilty of many of the things that you list there. As you say, it is very easy to end up in a kind of inert state where you keep thinking about doing stuff but never get around to it. I think part of the reason this occurs is through habit. And habits reinforce themselves. Even if they are bad for you, you repeat the behavior because it gives you a kind of security.
That’s why I find it really helps to just have a decent long break from the computer every now and then. I find that whenever I do this I do more and think less. And this isn’t just because I’ve become more energized as a result fo the refreshing break. It’s also because the habit of thinking too much has been broken – at least for a while.

I too fall into the “thinking” trap where I just spin ideas all day. It can be fun coming up with new ideas or ways of doing things. It can also be a way to procrastinate when I don’t really want to do what I am scheduled to do that day.
