What Makes Me Want To Retire Early and Rich
As promised a few days ago I wanted to share with you what it is that makes me want to retire as soon as possible and why I believe that becoming rich is a very positive thing and something that everyone should aim for.
But first let me tell you that finding my WHY, the reason for wanting to become rich and being able to quit my job, was not a fast process at all.
The truth is that, like most people that are trying to become rich, I wanted to become rich because of the money. Ever since I was a very young boy I have been fascinated with money and I have worked hard at acquiring them in any way I could think of (legally).
When I was very young I took out the trash and cleaned my room (which equals that I took everything and threw it into the closet)
in order to get my allowance.
Later on I was a paperboy, moved lawns and washed cars to make the money I needed. Never once did I think that money was something that was supposed to be given to me without effort.
At that time I didn’t spend the money I made or at least not all of it.
Never once did I think about why I wanted to make money but I just had the idea that it was a good thing and I was willing to work for it.
When I was in my teens I started to see the effect of money and I was able to feel what it was like not having as much money as some of the kids I went to school with. I was not poor and I didn’t lack anything but when compared to the kids in my class that had designer clothes and parents with big cars and homes I (my parents) couldn’t quite keep up.
At that time I knew that I had to become rich because I wanted to have what all the other kids had (which actually was only a few of them but I felt like it was all of them).
Wanting Money to Impress
It was around that time that I knew I had to get a “good high paying job” because that was what I saw that the parents of my friends had.
And for a lot of years I studied and worked to make money to buy stuff so that I was able to impress other people with what I had. I know now that this is not why you should have a goal to be rich but I thought so at the time.
Then a couple of years ago (4 or 5 years I think) I finally read something that changed my view completely. The book I read stated that if you aren’t able to enjoy what you have right now then MORE will not help you. Becoming a millionaire will also become “normal” and you’ll still end up wanting more. That really opened my eyes because I knew that I wasn’t enjoying what I had and was only focused on getting more.
Becoming Rich for Another Reason
That book was not the only one I read and I have learned so much in the last 5 years. From wanting to have money to buy stuff to impress other people I have now learned to love what I already have and not wanting money for the sake of buying more fancy things.
Enjoying what you already have doesn’t not mean that you can strive to have more!
One of the many things that I learned was that in order to make money (legally) you will have to provide VALUE to someone else. The more value you bring the more money you’re able to make.
It might sound too simple but I believe it to be true. For some it might sound obvious but I didn’t know that if you had asked me 5-6 years ago.
Providing Value is The Key
The reason why I am building my online business is two-fold and I am glad that I am able to share it with you because I hope that someone reading this will feel inspired by it and maybe change what they want to do with their life.
The first reason is that I really love the idea of providing value to others and as the years have gone by and I have had more and more opportunities to help other people I have come to love it immensely.
Some might argue that if one loves helping and giving so much then why not do it for free?
It is a good point and I do give a lot away for free but since I also know that people would never pay me for something that they didn’t feel was worth it then I don’t really have a problem with charging for some of it. It is not different from when I buy something from someone that I feel has something valuable to share. I love giving them my money because I feel I get value from doing so.
The second reason and this is probably my biggest “WHY” is that I am doing it for my wife. I want to put her (and me) in a financial situation where she doesn’t have to work for someone else (aka a JOB) and to get up early in the morning and come home late at night feeling stressed out.
Being able to give her the freedom to choose by creating a situation where we’re rich and able to retire, while making money helping other people and providing them with as much value as possible… That is my “WHY” and what keeps me up late working on my online business.
To Your Success,
Mikael

Hi Mikael,
Thank you for sharing so much personal information! One of the very first reason why I wanted to be rich is because I wanted to be independent and I quickly realized that unless you are financially independent, then you are not independent.
Getting out of the ruling of my foster family with which I had very bad relationship, was a very strong motivator for me to accomplish something by myself where I wouldn’t ever need to rely on them.

Hi Nicolas, thank you for being to open as well. Frustration can definitely be a strong motivator as well and maybe even stronger than aiming for something that you want (positively).
Even though I am glad that I have never been in a situation that I utterly hated sometimes I have wished that it wasn’t so (especially when I felt like I needed a kick in the…)

Hi Mikael,
Anger, frustration, revenge, where definitely the strongest motivators that build my character and help me accomplish what I did very young.
However, all of this did bring me to wealth but not happiness, and to me there can’t be true success until you got happiness.
Money alone is not the solution to all problems. It’s not what you have that matters, but who you share it with.
Learning to let go of the past is one of the best thing I did for myself and my family.

Again I agree. Money will not make you happy but on the flip site it will not make you unhappy either. Money is just money.
To be happy you’ll need to learn to appreciate what you have and where you’re at, while also enjoying the process of the journey to where you want to go.

Wow, may I firstly say – very nice and unique blog design!
Yeah, It’d be such a nice feeling for me to be able to bring home such a large income that my wife wouldn’t have to work if she didn’t want to. There are positive things about having a job, and I think everyone should work for a bit just so they learn those skills… but after a while when you just want to spend time with the kids, it’d be nice to know that she didn’t have to.
