Why Your Content will Affect Your Adsense Income
If you have ever had a website being monetized with Google Adsense you have most likely experienced this in its full effect but you might not have thought about it until now. It doesn’t matter whether you have a small niche website that you have created for the sole purpose of setting it up and letting it make money passively or whether you are building an authority website…. It will still be vitally important to write the right content to maximize your Adsense earnings.
Nicolas briefly mentioned it in the comments to my post about why ugly websites make more money with Adsense and he is absolutely right. But before giving you the conclusion let me first try to explain it from the beginning. When you’re trying to make money with Adsense there is only two things that matter:
The first is that you will want people to click your ads. Period! The more people that are clicking your ads the more money you’ll potentially make. This means that anything that is distracting your visitors from clicking the ads is a bad thing and should be avoided at all costs.
The second thing is that you will want the right people to click your ads because if you “force” (yes some websites actually do this) everyone to click your ads then the quality of traffic that you’re sending the advertisers placing the ads on your site will drop.
By quality I am talking about people that are actually looking for something because those people will be more likely to buy or sign up for whatever the advertiser has to offer them. If nobody buys or signs up then the traffic will be worthless and in order to protect their income source Google will not allow you to send too much poor quality traffic to their advertisers without taking action.
That is why you’ll see that you don’t make as much money per click as you thought you would. Poor quality traffic will give you poor payouts per click. I explain more about this in my post about making more money per Adsense click.
So what has this got to do with content?
The content on your site serves two purposes. The first thing is that it is there to (hopefully) attract as many people as possible from the search engines to your website. If you write content that people are searching for then there is a good chance that people will find your site. YES there is something called SEO and doing proper keyword research but I’m not going into that here because this is about writing the best possible content to maximize your Adsense income.
The best possible content when it comes to getting people to click your Adsense ads, is the kind that will attract people that are either looking for information or the people that are searching for something to buy. Both of these groups are ready to take action because they are in need of something. People that are looking for something is more likely to click ads!
But the next important point about your content is that it MUST NOT give people what they are looking for. If you answer their questions then they’ll just close the browser and go do what they were trying to do. Instead you want to give them enough information to keep them from hitting the “back” button on the browser but not so much information that they’ll end their search.
When people have read what you had to say but without finding the answer or the goods they were looking for they will be looking for a way to move on to find more information and RIGHT THERE THEY’LL SEE YOUR ADS.
Writing content like described above requires a little training but I can promise you that when you get good at it you will see huge increases in not only earnings per Adsense click but also a substantial increase in your CTR (then percentage of visitors clicking your Adsense ads).
To Your Success,
Mikael

Also, the type of industry you’re writing for I think matters as well..I’ve seen that a lot more people avoiding ads for money making websites.
Yet the sites that are more geared towards kids (myspace layouts/etc) are making a killing because they want to win a free laptop, and aren’t as phased by ads..

Hi Melody. I don’t think that it is possible so say anything like that as a fact but you will definitely be right in some cases. People searching for ways to make money is definitely as eager to click ads as everyone else. The once that don’t are more likely the regular readers and I believe that regular readers on kid’s blogs will have the same behavior.

That’s something that is so true, but not many people will be willing to say that openly, because it is not in the best interest of their readers etc. It makes sense though!

@Manshu, I think that some would even argue that showing Adsense is not in the interest of most readers…
