To Become Rich You Must Learn How to Sell
Selling is a vital part of making money and if you want to be rich that is one thing that you must be able to do… making money.
It may sound obvious but in today’s society most people think of something negative when they hear the word “selling” or being “sold” something. I don’t know if it has always been like this but it is definitely something that keeps a lot of people today from becoming wealthy and financially independent.
One of the reasons why people don’t like “selling” might be that they feel that something is forced upon them against their will and that the salesman are using dirty tricks to make them buy something that they really do not want to buy.
Where this way of selling comes from I do not know but it is definitely something that has been practiced and taught for many years and I am sure that we have all met or talked to a sales person trying to sell something to us in this way. Unfortunately this is still something that is being taught to sales people to this day and its effectiveness is decreasing fast.
But if this is what is being taught, then how are you going to learn to sell if that is not the way to do it? Luckily this is not the only way that is being taught and sales training has a lot of good aspects as well. It is not all bad.
Why You Must Learn to Sell
If you can accept that “selling” isn’t necessarily a bad thing, then let’s dive into why selling is a vital part of becoming rich.
To make money people will have to give you money and it is very unlikely that they are going to give you their money without getting something in return. Whether it is a physical product, a digital product, a service or any other kind of “thing”, then for people to give you their money you will have to give them something.
But before we ever get to the part where the exchange takes place you will need to have people want what it is that you offer. If nobody is interested in what you have to offer (sell), then you are not going to get them to give you their money and you are not going to become rich.
So you will need to find a way to get people to want your product and service. This is where the marketing and selling part comes in. Where marketing ends and selling begins is hard to say because the two go hand in hand. Without one of them the other one will be impossible.
Where Can You Learn to Sell
There are a lot of places that you can learn how to sell and there are a ton of seminars and books that will give you a lot of great information. There is no right or wrong way to learn it so just start somewhere.
Personally I would recommend that you get involved with a Network Marketing company. Not because of their product or their business opportunity (but you will naturally need to believe in the product in order for it to be something that you could recommend), but because of the massive amount of (often free) training they are going to give you.
I’ve been involved in a Network Marketing business for four years and even though I am not active anymore I have learned so incredibly much from the process and the training. I’ll not go into all the details of what you will learn and it might not be the right choice for you but if you choose to go that route you will become a lot more knowledgeable about yourself and your ability to be a good sales person increases tremendously.
The Trick to Sell the Right Way
The thing about becoming good at selling is not to learn all the “secret tricks and mind games” but rather to learn how you ask the right questions and get answers from your potential customer.
What you want is not to sell for the sake of selling but to sell because what you have to offer will help the customer to achieve what it is that they are looking for. If you force the sale you will leave the customer with a bad experience and you’ll not only get a bad reputation but you’re also not going to tap into the “word of mouth” effect as well as being able to do repetitive selling to that same customer.
So the “trick” is not to push something down the customers throat but to ask questions so that you learn what it is that the customer are looking for and then explain to them in a language that they can understand why it is that they can use what you have to offer to achieve that.
This is not an easy task and it will require training but it is something that can be learned and when you master it there is nothing stopping you from making a lot of money and becoming rich.
To Your Success,
Mikael

Hi Mikael,
It’s really funny to see how our backgrounds are quite similar. Although today I’d not join network marketing again, the years I have spend involved in that industry did thought me a lot indeed!
What people must realize is that they are sold and they are selling all the time, the commodity may not always be money, but the concept is still identical.
When you go shopping for something you like or need, you are still sold something; when you work in an office or for yourself, you are still selling yourself either to your boss, either to your customers.
The good buying-selling transaction occurs when all the right elements are in place, just think about the last time you heard about the latest blockbuster movie and totally rushed to go buy a movie ticket… you’ve been sold but never felt offended about it. Try to think why it was so.
Like Mikael said, the bad selling is when something you don’t want is forced upon you. The most memorable experience I have about this was 10 years ago with an insurance agent trying to make me buy an extra insurance. Using his stupid counter objections, it finally used his trump card telling me over the phone (luckily for him) that I didn’t care about my wife and kids!
Let me tell you straight, if you ever try to sell me something that’s the worst argument you can probably use to convince me!

We’re constantly being sold to and selling ourselves. Just think of when you are trying to find a mate. Then you can talk about “selling” and “being sold to”.
Our lives are a ongoing exchange of value and there is no reason for being afraid of it just because it involves money.
BTW I am not going to ask you why that is the worst argument one can use to convince you

Ha ha ha, I didn’t want to use this example because I was afraid that some people wouldn’t like the association of relationship and selling, but that’s what I had in mind too!
Yes, if you ask for money, everybody may not want to give it to you; but if you don’t ask for money, even less people are going to give some to you!

Selling was my biggest obstacle in making money online. I hate high pressure sales – and I am crap at asking for the money. But eventually discovered the truth of what you are saying if you can fulfil a need you will have many willing customers.

Mikael,
Although I do not typically enjoy the process of selling myself, at least with respect to selling in the traditional form, I am certainly inclined to agree with your comments with regard to the importance of selling.
Like it or not, we are all involved in some form of sales related activity, even those of us who work in a capacity outside of a traditional sales role.
Every employee, for instance, sells his or her labor to his or her employer. And business owners and entrepreneurs as well, must not only sell prospective clientele on the value of their offering, but must also sell investors and lenders with regards to the capacity of their firm to deliver an acceptable rate of return from an investment perspective.

I used to be a salesman many years ago and one of the first things they taught us was to never walk up to a customer and say “Can I help you?” as the easiest response was “No thanks, I’m just looking”.
The best way was to approach them in a friendly manner and to try and engage a conversation, through which you would try to establish exactly what they were looking for and then try to fulfill their needs. Most of the salesmen around me used to BS and try and force a sale and while they did better than I, my customers were happier and less likely to return a product. I was also able to sleep at night.

I agree. Selling is not as easy as it may seem. Anyone who has worked as a salesmen can vouch for that. I’ve experienced it first hand, and it really is not as easy as it seems. But once you get good at it, you can really put yourself on the road to riches.

I have never either really like selling myself in the traditional form.
But some of the ways I’ve seen “selling” done whilest trying to develop my wife’s bussines online, has made me almost come to love selling.
I write “selling” because it dosen’t seem like selling in the traditionel way, but more like a conversation like sire said, where the object of money is not brought up by the person having something for sale but by the prospect itself.
I have sometimes been in a situation where I wish they would just let me hear the price and let me know where the salespage is, because I want the product so bad.
That is the kind of selling i like and study more of.

I’ve never found any joy in selling. It’s never been a skill that I mastered.
However I think everyone should know how to sell and also WHEN they are being sold something. That way they can make an informed decision rather than one being heavily influenced by the sales person. There’s a reason that people are usually disappointed that they paid for the “undercoating”.

Very true words Chris. I think you’re on to something when you combine the fact that you don’t enjoy selling and the fact that you do not master it. I am pretty sure that if you came to master it then you would also find it a lot more enjoyable. Don’t you think?
